Reaction to bread

Post by Dee »

Over the past couple of years ive found that if im eat too much bread or a doughnut , or anything doughy i get terrible indigestion and heartburn so try not to eat too much of it .
Had pasta this evening also some garlic bread and once again i feel yukky, dont think i have an allergy to bread but just wondered if there is any breads that may be better for me, or would making my own be an option ?

You could try a gluten free loaf and see how it goes.

If you read the labels on most breads you'll see that one of the ingredients is soya..
I have found that if I make sure the bread I eat is soya free I can eat it without that yukky feeling..Soya is a bean which causes indigestion and bloating. Just wondering if your garlic bread may have it in..

I've just been speaking to a veggie friend for you, who I know gave up bread with soya in because she had IBS, she says she still eats soya in other forms but for some reason the soya in bread causes her problems... I watch out for soya additives because my granddaughter is alleric... Hope you find the answer as lovely fresh bread would be so hard to give up {cry}

Oddly enough, I had probs with some bread I bought last week and I looked on the label (as the soya thing was mentioned on here recently) and it had soya flour in it ...and fermented wheat flour as well as ordinary flour. confused>

Thanks for all your help, its really interesting about the soya in bread, i love fresh bread so over the weekend will make a few loaves just for me :-D at least then i will know what goes into it.
Will keep off any bread till then , just did toasted hot cross buns for my lot and to be honest just the thought of eating anything doughy puts me off eating it.
Will let you know how i get on

Try making a loaf yourself, this will tell you if it is the flour, gluten, yeast or additives. I make my own and this is my recipe.

1 lb flour – wholemeal, strong white, mix of white and wholemeal
1 teaspoon (mix with flour) yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
11 fluid ounces warm water

Put the water in the bowl first and add everything else
Mix well. Wholemeal, put into a baking parchment lined tin.

White needs kneading for about 5 minutes. Don’t get hung up about it, then into the lined tin.

It can be made in a food processor or a mixer with a dough hook, then it takes about three minutes 'doing'.

Leave it to rise until it has about doubled or an extra third in size, bake at 200 for about 30 mins. It will sound nice and hollow when you tap the base.

I've been making my bread for about four years and I've discovered that there is a lot of mumbo jumbo talked about making it. I do it like this and in all that time I've had one failure when it was undercooked.

When I was REALLY economising I used value plain flour - it makes better rolls than loaves, but still nice.

Rolls need about 15 - 20 minutes depending on your oven.

Ive not eaten any bread for several days now and feel far less bloated.
Look at the breads on the shelf at the supermarket and could not find one without soya flour.
Thanks for the recipe, will try that this weekend.

I sometimes getthat too, but its not the soya, if there is any in the bread here. I was justusing soya milk for a while and no problems there. I think it may be, for me, lighht lactose intolerance, so avoiding any products containing any milk might work. I wondered , as you mentioned pasta.so I would assume some cheese.
Unfortunately I adore cheese, but if I go a week or so without bread, milk or cheese I feel a lot better, but suffer as soon as I have the smallest amount, albeit afetr a couple of days, I getused to the effects, but only everfeel really good if I avoid any milk derivatives.

Might be owrth experimenting along those lines, for a short while

I have got a wheat allergy and I am sorry to say that this is exactly how it started. I was told to lay off anything with soya in it, but there was no change. Told that I had IBS. The syptoms got worse. I had to go and see a specialist doctor, who was very good. She explained that like everything, you need to eat everything in moderation, with soya and wheat added to so much these days, more and more people are getting allergic from overuse, much of it put down to IBS or soya, when in fact it is the wheat. In the end your stomach can't cope with it all.

If you find that you are allergic to wheat, please don't buy the wheat free bread (it really is expensive rubbish). Doves farm do a wonderful bread flour and have a recipe if you want to use a bread maker. Thier flour for cakes is to die for. My friends and family all come to see me on my baking days....... there is nothing that you cannot make with wheat free flour you will just need to adjust your recipe's.

I do hope that whatever the cause of your discomfort, you get better soon. If you do have a wheat allergy and want to contact me privatly then please do so.

It might not be the bread per se. I thought I was allergic to bread, but in fact I`m allergic to Yeast, so might be worth getting tested. I have cut out stuff with yeast in it and for long time now my health has improved massiveley and I lost lot of weight naturally without trying to diet!!
