My mum had both done at once (bi-lateral) at 78 and was walking down the ward unaided 2 days later. She couldn't wait, if you know what I mean.

3 months later I took her to Spain by car and arranged for her to fly home to Stansted alone, (first time on a jet, that was Easy she said), met and transported home by my sister.

The only problem we had, was that the Titanium metal knees set of the alarms at the check in and we found it impossible to explain to the little Spanish, non english speaking security gaurd, why the alarms kept going off, resulting in mum eventually grabbing her ankle length hemlime and hoisting it up to reveal the 2 giant zip scars. He blushed, waved the wand and gushed in spanish, we assume it was an apology!

Mums now 87 and in 3 weeks we are taking her to Fuertoventura for a weeks sunshine but I have got clever this time!

Typed "translate" into Google selected Google translate and typed in " This lady has two metal replacement knee joints", selected translate to spanish and printed off the result which I put into an envelope to take with us. Should save the gaurd some embaressment, oh and mum as well!

Same with my Mother 4FH, had both done and until the ruptured vertebre shot around after the Op.

Some take longer than others to get going, but always good in the end.

Are you running up and down the ward yet?? I have now got to have 1 new hip and both knees. At the moment my specialist is getting me through the summer by careful pain management with painkillers. My hip has had as many injections as is allowed and had my left knee done a couple of weeks ago but that is it now. Aiming for the end of September for the hip. Hopefully the first knee at the end of Feb. next year.

Thanks all. Back home now and very glad its over. Im not walking unaided yet and my knee is still very stiff if I sit for too long but I'm getting there. Not half as painful as I expected the painful bit is the exercising but I know its essential to do it. I had a spinal and sedation and it was fine. I was worried in case I would be able to hear sawing and banging but no. It seems a lot of older people than me cope better,some of the ones who had the op at the same time were marching around as if they had just had a graze Really missed the mutt and the chooks, now daddy is flavour of the month as he provided the mealworms etc for 4 days, talk about loyalty
