The old one kept getting stuck in the hole it fitted into, and the nth time I struggled to get it out the middle came out.
Although it still fitted it was useless with a hole in the middle.
Didn't do its job at all.

Yes. The sink plug kept getting stuck. Pulling it out pulled the chain off. So lever it out with a screwdriver in the metal triangle that the chain had been fixed too. Then that came off. Pull it out with pliers. OK till the middle of the plug pulled off. A sink plug with a hole in the middle is fairly useless.
