Some more of my family..
Re: Some more of my family..Very posh Richard - I've got quite a lot of old photos of great grandma's and such but most of them are wearing clogs and shawls!
I have got a letter off my nan's brother who died in the first world war - it's a very simple letter from "somewhere in France" written in pencil and he's asking can they send him some fags. It's a very simple letter but must have been the last one they received before his death and I always find it very moving that they kept it in the biscuit tin under the stairs. Julie

Re: Some more of my family..It's not boring at all Richard. It must be wonderful to have letters giving you a glimpse of their life. I have my grandparents ration books and their children's to; my mum and uncle. I bought a piece of glass for the top of my coffee table and have my grandparents ration books displayed under it along with some chosen photos and postcards sent to me during my childhood ( I started a postcard collection when I was a child and still continue it). I also have a letter I wrote to my granny in the sixties when i was 9, its so touching that she kept it. its lovely having things out to look at instead of being hidden away.

Re: Some more of my family..I reallly enjoyed seeing your photo's Richard. Like you, I had a suitcase full of family history in various forms which had taken me 25yrs of research to get together.
Because I am now an oldie, I wanted to make sure that it is always kept. I have entrusted it to my eldest son with the proviso that if no one else in the family is interested he gives it to the various record offices. I must say that I had done nothing as impressive as you with the framing of the photos. They look great and I do hope that someone else of the family will treasure them as well. I am now a widow and live with my memories.

Also like the idea that you tell your grankids stories about yourself and your own experiences. I,m sure that one day the families future generations will speak as fondly of you, as you do your past peers.

Re: Some more of my family..Oh I love this, totally mad about history. It can lose you in another world can't it? I read anything I can get my wee paws on about the Victorians, I think they were amazing. They just got on and did it - as opposed to now when we just talk about it! My cousin did my dad's side family tree and they were all "mariners" and "ships riggers" from Lowestoft. Is my ambition one day to go there but its a long way down!
My OH never smiles either Richard but I don't think he's posh. Just ratty Re: Some more of my family..I've been watching some old tapes of a programme which was on whilst I was holiday. Its called Britain first photo album with John Sergeant. He goes to different places and has a Victorian photograph of a certain place. He goes into the history of the place and then takes his own up to date one in the same place. The last one was quite sad. The old photo was some really old Regimental Barracks and now is a Sainsbury's car park. Its a very interesting programme.
Re: Some more of my family..Lovely photos, So nice to see them on display.
Dad has our family pictures and is trying to make sure all the names go on before they are forgotten. None of ours posh though - more the sons of the soil types.
Dad was amazed when we found his fathers WW1 record. He had been a very strict father with his 3 sons. And he had joined up underage, and apparently succumbed to the delights of Alexandria because he was disciplined and fined several times for being AWOL And Mum's Dad who had never spoken of it had been in practically all the worst bits of the Somme + Paschedale. Makes you see them in a whole new light. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France
