Braid is just thin string and what makes it go nastie is dirt,grit and gravel.
As you are winding in the braid rubs on the bottom and if it's gravel it will be abrasive on it.
Mud gets inbetween the strands and that is cutting into the strands as well.
You can tell when it needs to be either reversed or replaced as the braid goes all "furry"
but even then its only the last 10-20 foot that needs trimming off.
