I suppose a quarter of a square yard would be 18" x 18" so the 'fat' means bigger. (Its not a half yard by half metre either, on my calculation).

Bet someone asks though.

That makes sense, I think {rofwl} {rofwl}

Still confuses me when they list it at 2 FQ 1 half FQ 2 Fat Eighths.
Too much hassle trying to work out how much I'm getting in meters, my brain only works in meters/cms {rofwl}

Sort of Mo.
Material on the bolt is usuall 44" wide. A Quarter yard of material would be a quarter of a yard, 9" by 44" wide.
A fat quarter is basically a yard of material cut into 4 pieces (quarters) so measures 18" by 22".
Dom
PS A fat eighth is a fat quarter cut in half so measures 11" by 18"

Ah to be young. My brain is still working in 'old money'.

Actually, not money but certainly yards, feet and inches. And my scales weigh in pounds and ounces (a much more sensible system as each weight is half of the next up.)
