Sewing class

Post by jemberelli »

Today I went on a day's course at a local education centre. It was called the Shropshire Sewing Bee and although I expected it to be about learning about using your machine and experimenting with techniques, we actually learnt about applique, embroidery and couching. It was very interesting - not something I have ever done or had the urge to do but it was great fun. I was utterly rubbish but I am not very arty/crafty - I just want to be! Much practice needed but at least now I know the techniques and just need to keep having a go at home.

We did some applique, learnt french knots, lazy daisy, back stitch, stem stitch, stab stitch and couching. Piccie of my very rudimentary effort below - I can only get better!!

It was lovely doing something different and meeting new people - will certainly be keeping an eye out for more crafting classes/workshops in the future.

Sewing seems to be gaining in popularity now, Sewing Bee is on the tele at the moment. It's great to learn new skills, if we had a class here I would go. Your applique looks very pretty. I go to a Monday morning Craft and Chat, in our village hall. We get around twelve people doing their own craft work. No lessons but we bring projects to show, share craft magazines and books, and learn off each other. It's great fun.

I watched the first episode of sewing bee last night. It must be very difficult to complete the tasks against the clock. Making garments is not my thing, but I would have liked to chop the long skirt up and re design it. :-D
