Hi Robert,

Poetry is not everyone cup of tea and why should someone say that you have not written a piece of work unless they knew the original author.

I was once an editor of a poetry magazine know as the ‘Longford Writers’. When a competition was running we would receive hundreds of poems and as you can imagine a lot were not of the standered required, but I never put down the writers’.

Here is another of mine that I wrote from the view point of the lion in Marriott Edger poem ‘The Lion and Albert’

WALLACE ON DEATH ROW
Apologies to Marriott Edgar and this poem ‘The Lion and Albert’

There’s a famous place called Blackpool
That’s noted for fresh air and fun
However I’m waiting on death row
For I’m to be shot with a gun.

A Lancashire lad called Albert
Stuck a walking stick into my ear,
I asked him politely to stop it
And go for a walk on the pier.

But Albert being a Ramsbottom
He took no notice of me,
Still poking with his ‘orse’s ‘ead ‘andle
Saying, “Oi, I’m talking to thee.”

I will not let him annoy me
For I’m starting my yoga trance,
I’m oh so calm with my karma
I know that he hasn’t a chance.

Now the wife, she’s getting angry
And building up quite a rage.
Reaching out with her claws
She drags Albert into her cage.

Now that my yoga is over
I’m back in my cage all-alone,
I open my eyes and I’m shocked,
To see a blooded cap and a bone.

I got the blame for eating Albert
Though the wife she cooked up the plan
I know, I couldn’t have ate Albert
For I’m a vegetarian.

THE COMEDIAN by ROBERT CALLAGHAN.

To make people laugh is the goal
Bringing some joy to feed the soul
It’s the best medicine man can supply!
But not from a bottle, it’s from you and I

Humour can be funny, humour can be cruel
As long as you’re laughing, that’s the only rule
So if you are offended, or if you get upset
It’s just a joke, remember that don’t forget

If you choose to heckle, then think on this
It’s a comedian’s job to take the piss
You’ll probably come off second best
At least it’s a laugh for all the rest

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show
Let that smile on your face grow and grow
When your ready to laugh, make it loud
Let the comedian know, you’re a good crowd

When it comes to funny poems I’ve always liked Edgar’s work, which was mostly done by Stanley Holloway. One of my favourites is the following

THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS
by Marriott Edgar (1880 - 1951)

I’ll tell of the Battle of Hastings,
As happened in days long gone by,
When Duke William became King of England,
And ‘Arold got shot in the eye.

It were this way — one day in October
The Duke, who were always a toff
Having no battles on at the moment,
Had given his lads a day off.

They’d all taken boats to go fishing,
When some chap in t’ Conqueror’s ear
Said “Let’s go and put breeze up the Saxons.”
Said Bill “By gum, that’s an idea.”

Then turning around to his soldiers,
He lifted his big Norman voice,
Shouting “Hands up who’s coming to England.”
That was swank ‘cos they hadn’t no choice.

They started away about tea-time
The sea was so calm and so still,
And at quarter to ten the next morning
They arrived at a place called Bexhill.

King ‘Arold came up as they landed
His face full of venom and ‘ate
He said “If you’ve come for Regatta
You’ve got here just six weeks too late.”

At this William rose, cool but ‘aughty,
And said “Give us none of your cheek;
You’d best have your throne re-upholstered,
I’ll be wanting to use it next week.”

When Arold heard this ‘ere defiance
With rage he turned purple and blue
And shouted some rude words in Saxon,
To which William answered “And you.”

Twere a beautiful day for a battle
The Normans set off with a will
And when both sides was duly assembled,
They tossed for the top of the hill

King ‘Arold he won the advantage,
On the hill-top he took up his stand,
With his knaves and his cads all around him,
On his ‘orse with his ‘awk in his ‘and.

The Normans had nowt in their favour,
Their chance of a victory seemed small,
For the slope of the field were against them,
And the wind in their faces and all.

The kick-off were sharp at two-thirty,
And soon as the whistle had went
Both sides started banging each other
Till the swineherds could hear them in Kent.

The Saxons had best line of forwards,
Well armed both with buckler and sword
But the Normans had best combination,
And when half-time came neither had scored.

So the Duke called his cohorts together
And said — ‘Let’s pretend that we’re beat,
Once we get Saxons down on the level
We’ll cut off their means of retreat.’

So they ran, and the Saxons ran after,
Just exactly as William had planned,
Leaving ‘Arold alone on the hill-top
On his ‘orse with his ‘awk in his ‘and.

When the Conqueror saw what had happened,
A bow and an arrow he drew;
He went right up to ‘Arold and shot him.
He were off-side, but what could they do?

The Normans turned round in a fury,
And gave back both parry and thrust,
Till the fight were all over bar shouting,
And you couldn’t see Saxons for dust.

And after the battle were over
They found ‘Arold so stately and grand,
Sitting there with an eye-full of arrow
On his ‘orse with his ‘awk in his ‘and.

I wrote some poems on the seven deadly sins. Here is Avarice.

AVARICE

I spied her through the window
She was frail and very old
Aged at seventy seven
Arthritis had taken its hold
Her face was drawn and blank
Sat alone without any pleasure
That didn’t bother me at all
For I was after her treasure.

Slipping through the back door
In the kitchen I made some tea
Walking into the parlour I called,
“Hello grandma, its meeee.”
Rubies bloomed upon her cheeks
Her eyes like diamonds did shine
Her face had lustre just like gold
Her treasures were now all mine.

THE VERDICT

Standing erect
Limbs trembling.
I face my peers.

Awaiting judgement
Bright lights near blind me.

Verdict announced.
The adjudicator
Passes sentence.

“You are the weakest link,
Goodbye.”

Not a funny one but here goes
THE WANDERER
Coming in from who knows where,
Turning your tail from the Sun's fierce glare.
Silently down the heavens you slide,
Peacock tailed, trained like a bride,
A shimmering beacon coursing the sky.
Where do you come from? How and why?

Were you torn from your comets lair?
Part of another world somewhere?
Or have you always dwellt unseen,
Birthed in darkness so serene,
To sometimes flit into the light,
Before returning to your night.
My bottom garden's like Narnia without the mothballs. I go to pick beans for 5 minutes and when I come out hours have passed!

next week is the 3rd aniversary of my dog, Benson passing away, he was just 2 years old, this poem was written by my daughter Anna, shes 16 and has special needs, she was also born profoundly deaf, i think shes very special

BENSON, MY BROTHER

I can still remember it like it happened yesterday. The day we brought him home.
He was small, with long ears , and a black shiny nose, and the most gorgeous brown eyes, and a tail that had been docked, and yet still found a way to wag energetically.
He was my mums boy.
Benson. A new member to the family. A member we shall never forget.

I can still remember, like it happened yesterday, the way his long ears flopped as he ran like the wind to catch a small ball.
I used to find it ridiculous how he could find it so entertaining, by chasing a ball, just for it to be thrown away once more.
But now, I miss throwing that ball, for my brother. The new member to the family. A member we shall never forget.

I can still remember it like yesterday, the way he pulled on his lead, when he knew he was in for something adventurous, such as exploring woods and jumping in ponds.
I used to hate the smell of wet dog in the boot of the car.
But now I miss complaining to my mum, about the lingering smell of my brother. The new member to the family. A member we shall never forget.

I can still remember it like yesterday, the way he leaped in the air to catch a Frisbee for a competition, and land on all fours with the bright yellow thing in his mouth, to gain applause and all ten for scores.
I used to find it funny, how my dog could become a Frisbee catching champ.
But now I miss how my brother always seemed to be smiling, once he had achieved his goal. The new member to the family. A member we shall never forget.

I can still remember it like yesterday, the way he played tug of war.
Shaking the rope toy this way and that, just to be a sore loser at the end of all of it.
I used to think of how funny he looked when he was shaking his head franticly.
But now I miss games of tug of war with my brother, and wish id let him win. The new member to the family. A member we shall never forget.

I can still remember like it was yesterday, seeing my mothers face, pride and joy when he came for snuggles.
I used to think it was pathetic, how he would always want cuddles.
But now I miss the warmth and softness of my brothers fur, and wish id offered him more.

I can still remember it like yesterday, the day my mum had taken him to the vets, due to small lumps forming on his small young body, I can still remember, watching him lay on the floor, his energy drained from him.
I thought back then, it was nothing - maybe he was tired.
But now I know I was wrong. My brother was deathly ill.

I can still remember it like yesterday, the day my mother came home in tears, and looked me in the eyes and said
“my boy has died. He died last night” he had died from an allergic reaction to his booster jab. One that caused him to choke to his death.
My mind went blank.
I wished I had spent time with my brother, and loved him all the more.

I can still remember it like yesterday, the way the vets handed my mum a small white cardboard box, with my brothers ashes in it.
I thought back then, how disrespectful.
Now I wish I had done more about it.

Despite the fact Benson has left this world.
I know he is still a member of the family.
My mothers boy.
My brother.
And although he now lies in peace.
His energy will always stay with us.
And although we don’t see him.
His still in our hearts.
We love you Benson
And we always will.
Wait for us at rainbow bridge, and we shall be reunited once more.

I think the poem is great and so is the picture of the dog. To loose a pet is the same as loosing a member of the family and affects everyone.

This is Silky by the way.

For some reason I was locked out of the site and had to rejoin under another name.

No poems for a long time so here's another of mine.

THAT DAY

I wish I could forget, that day before today
When nothing did go right, my work it went astray.
That day it started badly so I won’t give it its name,
Now today’s today, I hope it’s not the same.
That day started badly, my shower it was cold,
I went down stairs to type, the ribbon was too old.
Upon that virgin page not a word did show
Just a streaky line, that gave me quite a blow.
Looking in my ribbon box, ‘twas empty, all alone
I’d used up all my ribbons, for my sins I would atone.
Going out to buy some, I’m now an hour late.
Arriving home again a note is on my gate.
I called today with a parcel, no answer at the door
Collect it from the Post Office, Collection nine till four.
Back in town again, to collect this parcel of mine.
Another hour wasted, another hour of time.
When I got the parcel, it was not for me
It was for my neighbour who lived at twenty-three.
The morning nearly over, no word had I written
This would not deter me, for I would not be smitten.
Ribbon now in place, the words would flow like water.
I heard the front door open, “Hello dad, it’s your daughter.”
Though I loved to see her, I wished that she would go
For in this cluttered brain of mine the words will overflow.
She said, “I’ll make your dinner, sit baby on your knee.”
Then before I knew it, it was half-past three.
The day now nearly over, the sun sinks you know where
And at this virgin page, I still sit and stare.
I’m going out this evening, to a place that’s miles away
I need to wash and shave and soon be on my way.
But tomorrow... Oh tomorrow, this day will be dead and gone
I’ll hide in my gazebo; distractions there’ll be none.

THOUGHTS OF A HORSE

I’m only a horse ridden by man
Carrying a burden whenever I can
I ponder deep as I trot along
This isn’t right it must be wrong.
My friend was gelded, that’s no fun
Living your life without a son
A mighty stallion he could have been
Roaming a land of luscious green
With fillies and colts by his side
A large family to give him pride.
He once knew a pony fit and stout
Sent in the dark, to bring coal out,
No light, no sun, no wind on his face
Hauling trucks along a steel trace.
Leather straps I don’t need
Metal in my mouth, it’s hard to feed.
Man was jealous of the unicorn
Hunted him down to take his horn
And poor old Pegasus had to die
Just because, man couldn’t fly.
The grey, the chestnut and the roan
Hobbled together so they can’t roam.
Far beyond a distant land
A heaven for horses, oh so grand
Where wild oats and wheat do grow
Sedately rivers gentle flow
Grass grows tall up to your knee
There are no men, I will be free.
And when this life on Earth is through
I’ll move on to those pastures new.

TIDY UP

tidy your room up
mummy said,
and dont forget to
make your bed.
in half an hour she`ll
come and see,
if its not done i will
get no tea.

where to start i do
not know,
shall i put away books
or my lego.
my crayons and the
paint are out,
a big mess there without
a doubt.

under my bed are all
my cars,
stuck to the carpet a
half eaten mars,
and on the celing i
can see,
something yukky
thrown by me.

play-doh squished under
the mat,
just cant think who
did that,
mummys coming i
wont get fed,
i know i`ll stuff it all
under the bed.
-----------------------

THE PARTY

i went to a birthday party
of a litle boy called jake,
he blew out all his candles
sneezed and fell onto the cake,
another boy called barry was
sick all of the time,
he was confused about the
jelly and jakes monster slime,
tony`s dad had to come get him
why i do not know,
but there was a rumor about
some trifle and the video,
the magicman arrived and
pulled a birdy from a hat,
then it dissapeared again
inside fat sally`s cat,
thats enough the partys over
said jakes mum close to tears,
it was the best fun i have ever had
cant wait untill next years..
