Anyone write poetry?

Post by silky »

Here is one of mine, first published in 2000.

RECIPE FOR A POEM

Weigh a few words of two or more
Add breaking lines to tease
Stir in a message or metaphor
Plus a rhythm that rhymes with ease
Bake with mental expressions galore
Then serve with a blending to please.

Weeelll.... a bit!
I actually won a prize on another forum with this one!
It was a Springtime thing and makes references to other forum members!

Admitedly under the influence of gin,
And no idea who's going to win:- )j;

Spring’s upon us with all its riches,
A young dog’s fancy turns to bitches.
Border flowers all in bloom,
Great weather for a witch with broom!

Cold cider in a sunny glade,
Could be something Bodger’s made.
My apple wine and Gareth’s mead,
Fulfills part of springtime’s need.

Lots of work for them who’s able,
Fresh spring fare upon the table
Hedgerow fruit for making wine,
Could be for a little moonshine!

Conduct ourselves with springtime decorum,
And still frequent our favourite forum.
Bazzer still at the bar inclined to moan,
Even when fledglings have flown.

So let’s think of better weather,
As one voice all together,
With lurcher, patterdale and plummer,
Bark along into a good summer!
I'd like to live as a poor man with lots of money.

I've been writing poetry on and off for a while. I go through phases with it, either writing a lot or not at all!

It's mostly on this website - http://members.tripod.com/pagan_writes/
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

Hi Blackie_fen,

Thanks for the link, but I could not find any poetry on the site. Maybe it’s only for members and unless I intend to use a site a lot, I don’t join.

Another one of mine. This type of poem is called a Ballade; it came into being in the sixteenth century and took over from the Ballad which could have over 100 stanzas. This poem has a strict rhyming scheme and can have 9, 10 or 11 syllables per line. When I was in the army I wished to join the paratroopers, but failed my medical as I had a heart murmur.

WHERE WARM THERMALS FLOW

Down in the hollow that’s known as The Dell
The Ash and the Oak are blooming in spring.
Forest floor painted with nature’s bluebell
While high in the branches birds nest and sing.
Out of the nest there peeks a small fledgling
Not ready for flight though craving to go,
With wings open wide in blue skies soaring
To be in the air where warm thermals flow.

On terra firma where man has to dwell
Stands a young boy, who’s hoping and wishing,
To fly on high with a sleek Philomel
That’s turning and soaring, dipping and gliding.
Facing the sky where soft winds are whispering
He gazes in awe with his face all-aglow,
Feet rooted in clay eternally longing
To be in the air where warm thermals flow.

Descending through clouds he spinningly fell
The wind rushes past him loudly screaming,
With joy in his heart he lets out a yell
Plummeting downwards no longer dreaming.
Akin to an albatross gliding on wing,
Beneath a white canopy he swings to and fro,
Drifting to earth he’s no longer speeding
To be in the air where warm thermals flow.

Like dandelions’ seeds, he’s parachuting
Floating on up-draughts above earth below,
Ambition at last blossomed this morning
To be in the air where warm thermals flow.

Authors note: Philomel is an old English word for a Nightingale.

Hi Silky,

Not sure what the problem was there - no membership is required. It might just be that you didn't get as far as the 'pagan writings' link where all the written stuff is. But as a couple of examples:

Squirrel

Squirrel twitches;
His whiskers aquiver with the scent of morning
He watches the world come to life.

Squirrel bounces;
Hand over tail, from branch to branch
Chasing the sunbeams as a cat chases leaves.

Squirrel scampers;
From the top to the base of the old Cherry's trunk
Chittering his battle cry to the wind.

Squirrel dances;
In loops, twirls and circles he covers the ground
A dervish, battling the ghosts of Winter.

Squirrel tires;
His energy capped by the cold of the air
He crosses the grass in low leaps to the house.

Squirrel settles;
Pulling his tail in under the thatch
He cleans his ears and dozes in comfort.

Her Seasons

Spring had bought her as a bud
Tender, green, untried, untested,
Lain in a crib, catkin-soft
And given her first taste of rain.

Grass under chubby feet was wet to touch
Small fingers plucked at crocus flowers
Wide eyes watched as snowflakes fell -
The sun was dappled then.

Summer bought her as a rose
Stretching, growing, climbing, bright,
Lain in a bower 'neath shade-giving trees,
Her softness guarded and prized.

Earth under dancing feet was warm to touch
Slender hands brushed through ripening corn
Eager eyes watched butterflies dance overhead,
The sun throwing shadows which meant nothing.

Autumn bought her as a rosehip
Fruitful, ripened, glowing, sweet,
Nestled in comfort behind a few softened thorns
Nourished by soft summer nights.

Leaves under steady feet were fragile,
Experienced hands gathered apples and sloes,
Knowing eyes saw the fields stripped of the harvest,
The sun shone on for young leaving nests.

Now winter brings her as a stem
Upright, enduring, steadfast, strong,
Cushioned on thick swathes of dried heather,
A reminder of beauty once easily seen.

Paths under slowing feet seem longer,
Wrinkled, still-soft hands work steadily,
Wise eyes watch for the swelling of buds
And the coming of the new sun to open them.

Oh - and a happy Beltane to you too Mallard!
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

Two great poems.

At one time I grew rose hips (Dog Rose) for herbal tea and jam, but they overtook the garden after 25 years so I removed them.

GRANDMA’S WAR

On Mondays
Attired in
Floral pinny,
Knotted headscarf,
Sleeves rolled to elbows,
Grandma prepared for war.

Armaments consist of :
Dolly tub,
Posher,
Washboard,
Scrubbing brush,
Long green bar of Fairy soap.

War zone,
Steaming hot water
Fired by coal
Ladled from copper boiler.

Woad,
In Dolly Blue Bags,
Prepared the battleground.

Arms aching from mangle turning,
Grandma brush back wisps of grey hair
With wet forearm.

Battle over,
Enemy surrendered to the clothesline.
Awaiting torture
By hot iron on Tuesdays.

Monday was always washing day and while doing the washing my grandmother would also make a stew for the evening meal. As well as the stew, she would make a very large bowl of suet which was divided into three. 1) Went into the stew as dumplings. 2) Was mixed with dried fruit and became ‘Spotted Dick’ and 3) was rolled out and spread with jam and rolled back up again and placed in a long round tin to make ‘Jam Rolly Polly’

NO APOLOGY

No, I’m not a hard man
But I’ll fight for what is right
Using the law and argument
With all my strength and might.

I also have a sidekick
My wife bought me years ago
She’s an English Bulldog
And she goes wherever I go.

The Bulldog is portrayed
As a bully and a tyrant
But I found her very loving
And never ever errant.

So I won’t apologize
For the tears that ran as I wept.
The vet withdrew the needle,
Queenie slept and slept and slept.

I used to write poetry
It brought me great joy and glee
then a teacher, who's name I won't mention
said' you didn't write this' and put me in detention.

So from that day forth, I doubted my skill
I'd lost the glee and i'd lost the will
So to all you teachers out there
Your words can harm, so be aware.

That fateful day, a small boy was crushed
The poetry in him was forever hushed
Now that boy is a man, and he sees the light
The name of that teacher was Ruth Knight.

this is true, it was me.
