Being an avid fan of Laurel and Hardy, the wife and I spent a weekend at Ulverston and visited the Stan and Olly museum. A lady author name Gladys Hobson asked if she could publish my poem below in her book Northern Lights. We have since become very good friends. You can see a photo of me with Gladys and another author friend, Geoff Nelder at Geoff’s book signing. I’m the one at the back.

bookeventcenter.ning.com/profile/GladysHobson (Cut and paste)

Gladys lives in Ulverston and her book was a collection of short stories about the North from local writers. Though I now live in Lincolnshire, I was born in Lancashire and therefore a local writer.

REMEMBER?

Remember Ulverston?
You and I, hand in hand
Like teen-age lovers in mid-fifties bodies.
Pewter coloured clouds sprinkled their confetti.
We didn’t care, not you and I.
The ancient market square,
Encompassed in old buildings and new shops.
Its quaint museum, with ten-seated cinema,
Dedicated to Stan and Olly.
I remember.

Remember the lakes?
The old steam train,
No longer ‘Faster than fairies faster than witches’,
Chugging between sedately woodland glades.
Lake Windermere, with its yellow submarine giving a different view.
Above waves, whitewashed houses stand out while we drift by,
Their manicured gardens dip their toes in cold dark water.
We didn’t care, not you and I.
Still in love after all these years.
Yes, I remember.

Remember the journey home?
Three lane motorways squashed into two -
By red and white cones.
Hours of nose to tail traffic.
We didn’t care, not you and I.
I remember, yes I do remember.

Acknowledgements to Robert L Stevenson for line three, stanza two.
Taken from his poem ‘From A Railway Carriage’.

CHRISTMAS DELIVERY
By John A Silkstone

Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen
Comet and Cupid, Doner and Blitzen,
Came out of their stall’s one winter night
With Santa and sledge they started a flight.
They few round the world delivering toys
No matter what colour, the girls and the boys.
Delivering gifts in the wink of an eye
Children asleep don’t see them pass by.
Presents delivered, no more shall they roam
Happy and content they start off for home.
To rest in their stall’s till next Christmas day
When Santa and reindeer once more will display,
The presents and gifts they give out with joy,
To people on earth, the great hoi polloi.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all.

Attitude

What are you looking at?
Why are you staring at me?
Don't you like the way I dress?
Are you jealous of my blue hair?
Or is it my bright red boots?
Not proper standards for you I suppose?
Perhaps it's the ring through my nose.
I wear my hat, the peak at the back.
Only the conformists wear it to the front.
Maybe it's my mirror sunglasses, you can't see my eyes.
So what are you looking at?
Just why are you staring at me?

I like the poem Mike.

It’s true; people do judge what they see. Without looking at the inner person.

I don't know if I dare put my verse up as no one has read any before and not very good. I just liike to jot down how I'm feeling at different times.
I wrote this a couple of weeks ago.

First Glance of Spring

From my window I see March murky and grey
The bushes and trees look as dead
A pile of browned leaves near the pathway does lay
Enfolding a creature in his winter bed.

A row of trees like sentries stand
Waving branches as yet unadorned
They stretch ever upwards, as if to demand
Suns warmth, to unfold buds newly formed.

Beyond the trees I see something new,
Like fairy lights in the gloom.
They are opening flowers of sherbert hue
From bursting buds on the broom

I look to earth with eyes yet unseen
At dead foliage left from last year.
There at it's feet are new shoots of green
My first glimpse of spring almost here.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.

Hi Albertajune.

Like it, thats what I write poetry about and have published a small book of my writings called "As I See".

I have also stated a free web based writing circle and you can view it at

www.fenlandwritersrcircle.com

As I said internet based so you don't have to live on my doorstep to add your work to the site, inn fact you could live anywhere in the world!

Hi folks, I to have discovered the link to my site is not working, but if you copy and paste it into your search engine, (I use Google) it brings it up no problem.
This is the first time I've listed a link to my site on here and I've probably mmade a really silly mistake when doing it.

Just a simple shortie to keep the thread going. I can see the bird table while sitting at my desk.

From My Window

There stands the bird table beneath the oak tree
Full up with goodies for my friends, from me.
Daily they visit to see what to gain
Daily I watch them through my window pane.
Blue tits and great tits and a tit with black head,
Green finches and woodpecker with splashes of red.
Down in the damp grass, two blackbirds peck
While pushing himself in, a dove with ringed neck.
Others do pass them, but just cannot see
The wonder of nature that is facing me.

Have a good day

June

MY MISTAKE

Yep, it's all my fault but I'm going to blame it on a dyslexic key board.

The link should read :-

I’m doing a poetry course through Hull Uni. Last week we had to write a Villanella, this is a strict rhyming poem with line that repeat themselves. This is the one I wrote.

MEMORIES RECALLED

Your memories linger there
A smile lights up your face
While you travel through the year.

Your dreams do not impair
The boundaries of you’re space
Your memories linger there.

To your father, you’re his heir
For life is not a race
While you travel through the year.

No need to stand and stare
You’re in that special place
Your memories linger there.

Your thoughts in loving care
Are held in an embrace
While you travel through the year.

Your mind, a data bank of software
Which cannot be replaced
Your memories linger there
While you travel through the year.

Hi Silky.
I was not aware there was such a thing as a poetry writing course, or that this type of poem has a name.

Here's one I wrote in the same manner :-

Waiting

Why am I waiting again?
Queing for a bus that may be late again
And then when it arrives
The long que transfers to the ticket machine
I am waiting in turn again

Why am I waiting again?
Now I’m in a supermarket que
At the deli counter waiting for cheese
And then I que at the at the till to pay
I am waiting in turn again

Why am I waiting again?
I have driven my truck 400 miles
When I arrive, it’s the back of the que
Then when it’s my turn, they go to tea
I am waiting in turn again

Why am I waiting again?
The snow came down heavy last night
Blocking the road, I cannot get out
I am waiting for it to be cleared
That’s right, I’m waiting again

Why am I waiting again?
For ninety years I’ve been waiting
In the nursing home, I waited to die
I’m going to be cremated, I’m in the que
Even after death, I’m waiting again

I like your work
Mike
