Everything that is raw goes in my composter, but my dad says I can't put cooked stuff in there. Can cooked veg go into a wormery? I did look into bookashi, but I dont think it would suit me as I dont really have the scope to dig the pickled stuff in regularly

Just googled it - it's an in- kitchen composter which you fill and sprinkle special bran in. It comes with 2kg of bran which the site says lasts 2 months, but to purchase 2 further 2kg packs of the bran is £23. yike*

Definately not for me, too expensive, too much faffing about. My veg peelings and scraggy bits go straight on the compost heap.

Just been checking out price of the bran stuff for bokashi bins and the price quoted by p.penn is quite high, it is available for 6kg for £25.42 .... I think this amount would last a long time. Hmmmmmmmm will have to think about this and shop around the web a bit more.

Just starting to realise (thankfully before buying bokashi) that we really have very little food waste... this week I am going to keep it in a seperate container and see just how much there is.... yes, yes, I realy must get out more....could go somewhere nice with money saved from not buying bokashi bin! :-D

Regarding bokashi bins, have you tried your local council??

In our area we were told by our council that we could apply for bokashi bins, which I did. I received two bins and four lots of bran. I have to say an excellent little gadget, you just had to be careful when emptying the liquid reservoir - as it is quite ghastly stuff. I do feel I didn't use enough bokashi (which is the special e's bran stuff) and that is why it did have a bit of a whiff.

Try your local authority, I reckon I got about £50 worth of stuff for nothing from them.

I have a wormery which is great - as well as giving lovely moist compost it provides the miracle of 'worm wee' which is a great liquid fertiliser. It also just keeps going - I didn't put anything in mine for quite a while at one point but the worms were quite happy when I went back to it!!
