Gritting The Roads

Post by saint-spoon »

Obviously from a safety perspective gritting seems like a pretty good idea but there are a number of really quite negatives that come from gritting. Firstly the rock salt is a finite resource that we mine in huge quantities. Secondly all this salt flows off the roads and onto the verges detroying the habitat.
Having spent a lot of time up and around northern Europe during the wintertimeIi strikes me that places like Norway don't seem to be so dependant on salt for their road safety, preferring instead to use chains or studded tyres on their wheels.

SS,
Most countries that have oodles of snow do, so it probably works out cost effective, as do snow ploughs. But here where oodles of snow is rare it wouldn't be.
But I agree re the potential for salt damage to wildlife etc and using up resources.
