There's nothing I can do.

Post by Orfy »

I don't buy News papers or watch the news. I catch the news a bit on R4
The reason is it's usually full of bad news that I can do nothing about and any out come that is going to effect me is inevitable.

I'm fed up of hearing about corrupt and dishonest Politicians!
Voting is not a tool to deal with it for multiple reasons.

The paradox of my situation is it's the newspapers and news programs that hold the politicians to account.

Join the ranks with your last two senetences. I think we all pretty much feel the same.
I am afraid I am a news nut and do watch the news and read the paper from start to finish.
But I feel once my Grandson is deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, I probably won't. Which isn't a bad thing as it is all so depressing.

I keep up with the news on Radio 4 and bbc online for local news - at least then I have some control over what I do or do not read. I rarely watch the news on television as it depresses me too much. I read "newspapers" - and I use the term lightly as they are the pieces of paper my OH buys that tend to have their names in red and white - because I'm a compulsive reader and cant help myself, but am trying not to because I end up in a foul mood and ranting about the multitude of sins I have just read.

I try to avoid the news wherever possible. I know it's a case of burying my head in the sand but what is the point about worrying about things that are totally beyond my control?

So much of it is contrived for a certain effect anyway. (sorry, the sociologist in me coming out!)

I know just what you mean. I think we are all utterly sick of reading what MPs and MEPs get up to and how much they get paid to do it - they are all complete hypocrits. But what can we do???

I am not sure any party is much different from another anyway so voting doesn't seem to make much difference.

My father-in-law (and also my mum) reads the paper and watches the news and comes round here and gets het up about it all, but I say to him that all he is doing is stressing himself out about something he cannot change - its no good for the health so don't read it :!:

I find burying my head in the sand is the best option for me. The news makes me feel totally helpless, what can I do to make a difference? I listen to Radio 5 and 4 a bit but have to turn it off, totally sick of a morning presenter on 5. Can't say who, might get sued.

me too, fed up of it all, the only radio stations i listen to is planet rock and LBC on my dab so can't escape from it on LBC entirely but I don't watch the news on the tv and never read newspapers. OH is the complete opposite and it makes him miserable so i'd rather be ignorant and happy than clued up and miserable/saddened like he gets, but thats just me. :?

I am sort of the same, I do watch the news but I feel I can't trust it to be the truth. It makes me angry rather than depressed at the moment. Politicians seem mainly interested in their own careers & wealth. We allow industrialists to systematically strip the planet of its resources and ruin the environment because there is no alternative. Financiers have done a similar job on the economy.

It seems the majority of people find the news depressing and feel powerless to do anything about anything. Everyone thinks political parties and MPs are all the same so there is no point in voting.

So much for democracy, eh? It doesn't appear to exist today. Try standing up & making a statement & chances are you will be kettled, batoned & maybe even killed.

After my bang on the head, I think so differently about so many things.

But much as a lot of people see it as being negative, I find it is quite nice to be honest! Like watching the news - I don't anymore, I did before the accident but now I feel like time is precious and why do I want to be bogged down with other peoples issues - I don't! Last week the specialist told me 'you'll be interested in it again soon enough'.... Do they not realise, I WON'T! it's not a true representation of 'real life'. I like my new simplistic out look! keeps me stress free and gives me more time to do the things I enjoy!

Sorry a slightly )ot: rant, but IMHO TRUE!!!!

x

PS: I do Newsround too if needs must!
2 children, half a springer Spaniel, a Hamster, 2 Goldfish and an allotment. And a very excited, now mummy of some chickens again, Daisey, Dotty and Master Yoda!

I also agree with Baaaa Bok Bok Bok and her outlook, I do watch the news and try not to take in to much what is happening around the world and at home because I feel ,I don't know these people ,they don't know me. What is my concern going to do to help their situation, nothing. Although thank God we are pulling out of Iraq, about time too, far to many good men lost ( personal opinion)

I was in Hospital as few years ago with a mild Heart attack( a sit up and think moment ) and it made me realize that (a ) life is to short to worry about the world and his wife (b) if you did nobody is going to thank you anyway.

Kith and Kin is first on my agender these days, beyond that I do not have the ability or capacity to cope. confused>

Does anyone remember a group of Chinese students getting ploughed down by tanks because they dared to ask for the right to vote? Tianamin square shocked the world and those students died for the basic right that we seem to throw away so cheaply.
It doesn’t matter which side of the political divide you stand at least you have the right to vote; admittedly the politicians will change the rules so as to suit their own purposes, after all no one actually voted for the current prime minister to be in charge but there was apparently a democratic process happening.
Additionally it seems that voter apathy is allowing some of the less savoury elements to weasel themselves into power. It doesn’t matter how you market it, some of the nationalist parties have some pretty unpleasant small print hidden within their manifestos.
