Fireworks

Post by wendy »

I have just had a distressing mail from one of the girls on my forum. A house a few doors down her lane had a firework party tonight and didn't tell her.
As she was out shutting them away, and she has about 30 chickens, the fireworks started, panicking them all.
Two died in front of her from heart attacks, and one is now indoors very, very poorly.
I think we should shut them away early rather than late for a week or so.

It doesn't help with my attitude towards fireworks, when i used to work for our local firewrok company, they had instances of horses loosing their foal whilst foaling due to fireworks, a cow died while stampeeding, the list goes on & on
But.........I have to say my girls had to go through 3/4 of an hour of it last night & they were fine, all sitting on their perches in the same order as they went at bedtime, but we got so many displays, maybe they have just got used to it.

What does me Wendy, is she lives in the middle of no where, she literally has just the four neighbours, then nothing for miles, most of those neighbours keep chickens, & it was them who got her into hens in the first place, I bet she's devastated, she dearly loves those girls.
I have sent her a little message today

That's right Mel, you have been up there as well.
It is right in the sticks isn't it? and she just lives for her birds they, and the dog, are all she has. Bless her.

Oh bless her, I've just had a reply too, she is utterly heart broken, I'd love to pop over & see her, she is one of the sweetest people, wouldn't harm a fly.

That's terrible.

People do put chickens into another draw don't they "Oh, just chickens, don't need to tell them".

Maybe letting a few off outside their home at 5am would do the trick.
But alas, no. Just reducing yourself to their standards.

They should at least be told ?

Hi Richard.
She has had the courage to go and tell the people what happened.
They said they knew it upset horses and cattle. Well surely if it upset them it will a little hen. People's stupidity is beyond belief.

I echo Morphs sentiments )de:

I'm so glad they're banned here (for domestic use - still have to put up with them every time there is some sort of festival going on locally), but there is a black-market and many can still get them now and then. The amount of animals that die from the consequences is gut wrenching. I once had to hold down my friends huge dog in a room because her OH thought it would be fun to let some off..................didn't he get an absolute mouthful once I'd settled the poor dog down.

The poor lady who lost three of her girls - that is just so awful

Hi Wendy,

Sorry to hear about your friends' awful experience - my heart goes out to her.

I think Geddauk's idea is brilliant - maybe we should start up a chicken keeping commune on an island away from all the idiots!
