About Fresh Start for Hens
Posted: 22 Jan 2011, 20:03
Hen Rehomers UK was founded over two years ago. Prior to this many of us had been involved in North London Hen Rescue.
We are a not-for-profit voluntary organisation. A group of people who come together to take hens out of cages, transport them to the many collection points we have and rehome them into permanent, loving homes. Our volunteers come from all walks of life - they have a common bond - to give ex-battery hens (destined for slaughter) the opportunity to live life as a hen (scratching about in the soil, laying eggs in nest boxes and being able to roost on a perch at night).
We work closely with farmers, and arrange to secure the lives of the hens and then advertise the date the hens will be released from the cages. We do not, as some people think, break into farms and steal hens. We work legally, ethically and in the interests of the hens.
We receive no funding, we do ask for a donation of £2.50 for each hen, this does not cover our costs. We have hens to pay for, transport to hire and hens to transport over a number of counties to deliver to collection points.
We work on a shoestring and welcome any assistance, whether that be people offering to volunteer or people making donations to help us carry on our work.
We are eternally grateful to the wonderful folk who offer homes to the hens and give them the opportunity to revert back to what nature intended.
