Acquiring chickens

Post by BillyTickle »

Hello all,

We are new to chicken keeping (in fact havnt started yet). Our house and chicken run was delivered at weekend and is on site now in garden.

Feeders etc will be investigated next week but does anyone have any contacts for buying chickens, any breeders etc

We are looking at rearing a couple of buff orpingtons and wonder if anyone knows where I could find these in the manchester.west yorkshire or lancashire areas. Failing that we would like to find suppliers of any chicken breeds.

Thanks (any other advice or pearls of wisdom would be welcome too)

Hi Billy,

The supplier list on the Down the Lane site should help
http://www.downthelane.net/suppliers/po ... ngland.php

We were very lucky and found a supplier 10 min from home via this forum.

Good luck

Hi you are in for a few laughs....... we were going to buy Orpingtons but changed our mind when we saw our Isa Browns. They are very very trusting and friendly birds, and despite the twins charging around the garden they never lose their cool. AND these birds were destined to be batt hens so we saved them before the event rather than after the event. Good luck

Hi Billy -

Well, I have hybrids and pure breed poultry. We recently took on a further 6 ex-battery hens. At the end of the day some people love the ex-batts and for some people they are wanting to get point of lay hens and start from fresh. If you were interested in getting some ISA's you could always try www.northlondonhenrescue.org.uk who have a rescue taking place weekend after next.

I am assisting Chickenchaser with part of the South Yorkshire re-homing. Why not check out the website and see what you think.

Failing that, you should be able to find something local to where you live. Do you mind saying what town/city is nearest to you? You could always pm me if you want.

HI Billy - there is a BHWT rescue helper in Haslingden, just north of Bury. Try e-mailing her she is normally very good.
