Urgent plea for homes in Manchester/Liverpool areA plea from a lovely lady on another forum:
"There is a farm at Newton Le Willows (in between Manchester and Liverpool) and the farmer is retiring. He is slaughtering all his chickens on the 9th August (short notice but I only just found out). They have not got to the end of their commercial usefulness but as he's closing down he just wants rid so he is willing to sell them for rescue for £1.50 each. More than the going rate and completely ruthless of him but he says they're worth more because they are still in lay. Anyway, there's a rescue being arranged by some local animal lovers and I just said I'd see if anyone could give some a home. They are raising some funds so you could maybe haggle the price. Sue 01942 726141 Debbie 07756746965 I think they'd prefer people local, as their budget is limited (they're doing this themselves) but if anyone's interested just ask them to call, and I'm sure they can work something out!" I have heard of this one also.
But really needs to be local, unless people are willing to drive. Wendy http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning I have just had a chat with the lady organising this rescue, and she has already managed to find homes for 600 - but there are another 200 plus still available. Anyway, I have said I will meet her on Sunday evening and collect 12 for us.
The hens are Rhode Island Reds and are 14 months old. If anyone en route on my journey would like some, but unable to travel, I have told Debbie , the organiser I would be happy to collect when I get mine, and drop them off (South Manchester/ High Peak area) She does have my phone number.

If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Good news about this rescue - Sue and Debbie have managed to find homes for all the hens. We went over to Merseyside today, to collect 12. A few are a bit bald, but all in all, they look in pretty good order - big birds. They are quite lively, and not as sickly looking as the previous ones. Also as soon as I put the food and water in the run, they dived in. The other ex batterys stood and looked at the food for at least two days - these were either very hungry or cottoned on quicker.
There was another lady waiting at the meeting place, and she took 12 as well. There we all were, with boxes and crates, outside Robinsons horse superstore, in their car park, putting the rather tatty looking hens in our boxes and crates ....the staff from the store were just leaving to go home, and we did get some funny looks. They will probably be all watching it on the security cameras tomorrow LOL!!! Haven't they done well. Well done them and you
