New homes needed for my hens :(

It's with regret that I have it give up my hens.

I know they have mites and are in need of some amount of
TLC. I have been going through various processes and treatments and I cannot
Find an answer.

This is a bit of a plea - I would really love to keep them but
With a toddler I cannot risk the mites coming
Into the house too. I have seen them on me before and
I have ultimately tried and failed :(

They are just over a year old and were laying 2 eggs a day. There are 2 chickens - you are welcome to their housing and water container, food, and hay I have.

They are wormed. Have lovely temp remnants & hope someone can help.

I'm based in Notts.

:( x

Off the top of my grad without looking at the bottles would it be- DE? diatom? Chicken mite spray (it's bright pink) I've tried very evasive measures - removing everything, dusting pen & chooks and repeating to try and break the cycle. Don't get me wrong I love you dearly and I have tried persevering with this and am
Just at a loss.

One of the items I used was a powder that the mites are not be able
To stick to and I've used sprays, I've got
Some Jayes Fluid but it says really harmful to
Cats (which I have too) so I'm wondering if to try that.

I did a lot of research into them before getting them
But can't seem to shake the mites problem.

It has been a very bad year for red mite for us too. I used a Chicken House Fumer and it sorted it in no time. The size you get depends on the size of your coop but I'd guess it would be the small ones for your set up.
I did the coop once and then again 6 days later. After the first one there were no red mite for the first 4 days then the next lot hatched and were zapped by the second application.
We went from getting covered in them to none after doing the first fumer and after knocking them right back the normal methods have kept on top of them.
We got our fumer from Here
For the price it's worth giving it a go.

PS Now the weather is cooling down the red mite numbers will drop as they start to hibernate.

Thanks Totally Scrambled

Ive used the foggers previously and have just looked up the names of what Ive used previously - it was DE, Diatom, Poultry Shield?

I have a plastic kennel and thinking if that could be an answer (no wood) and attaching some chicken wire to it (somehow)

>shrug<

I have a plastic house and usually no mite problems. But this year we got them. I realised the plastic nest box I was using, had hinges to attach a lid.
There were the little blighters. }hairout{
A complete scrub and hose down, a new plastic nest box and no mite...Phew !!

The mites dont tend to live on plastic do they? I have a huge plastic dog kennel (which could become a housing area and am thinking of getting some wire mesh would I could hook up to the kennel area (its a bit like a hex shape - people use them for rabbits and chickens?)

This would sort the wood problem (as Id just burn the current housing) and treat the birds. I dont know that may work...

we have just treated 6 hens we rescued from bad conditions we burned the coop bathed the hens and frontlined them and used smite powder on the hens 3 nights in a row and then again every other day ,the hens have responded well and have no lice redmite etc we kept them housed in a dog crate in the house for the first few nights so that any redmite would be visible as we put them on an old sheet we have got rid od all creepy crawlies we also wormed them at the same time Katherine I hope you get rid of them and are able to keep your little girls but if not please feel free to pm me im sure I can get good homes for them {hug}

Not so certain it is the plastic house. But more the crevices.
Most plastic houses [mine is a double wheelie bin holder] are moulded so no crevices.
I had the problem with the hinge of a plastic box.

Thank you :)

You are commited! I couldn't bring myself to bring them in the house - I really need to get rid of the mites. They make my skin crawl -
Literally!!

I've ordered a new hex shape pen for them in metal and also their sleeping bit will be a big plastic kennel type arrangement. Hopefully with some treatments this will get rid of the mites.

Do mites live on the grass? Just wondering where to put them on the lawn - obviously not where they have been if chances are the mites will be in the grass etc x

Not certain about the grass. But they are on the wild bird population. So will drop, jump or in some way get on the hens.
Just a case of keeping them at bay.

Cant display a pic still trying......

Chickens in their new "pen" tucking into tea.

Ill see if the plastic hut and outdoor housing works. Although I think I will find a more substantial netting/roof for the outdoor bit and somehow attach it a bit better to the plastic bit (although there is metal pegs into the floor).

Its not very fox proof :/ but better mite proof so Im weighing it all up. The old housing (slightly pictured) is going to be burnt.

So for now there is a happy outcome :)

thank you to all x
