The Chelsea Flower Show (BBC all this week)

Post by Richard »

BBC all this week.

Have to admit I don't do flowers (coloured things on the end of stems) but the Malaysian 'Grow your own dr-ugs' Garden of James Wong looks interesting.

By the look of it, loads of Gardens are named after their Sponsors rather than a theme.

But I'm sure it will interest many on here.

BBC official link = The Chelsea Flower Show.
The Daily Telegraph Website has pretty good pages on it as well.

When we went one year we were walking down the central avenue when there was a PA announment telling people to be aware there were pickpockets working the crowd. On cue, as far as the eye could see, hands went to check wallets were still there. How nice of them to show the pickpockets where the goodies were to save them time :-D

I went a few years back on the second day. Truely beautiful.
I love flowers. No good at growing them. But love them

As a young girl (1960s) my Dad used to take me. The smell in the marquee is what I remember most - strawberries and every scented flower you can imagine.
In the old days RHS members got a free transferable ticket. The estate owner would go up on the tuesday. Then the gardener was given the ticket for the wednesday. We used to set off at 6am to get there for opening time so that you could get into the marquee first when it was almost empty. If there was more than one of you, the first went in with the ticket, walked round to the side and passed it out through the railings to the next... Pretty frugal..
Later I even did a couple of stints manning a stall but it was getting pretty crowded and uncomfortable by then. I haven't been since late 1980s but I watch it on the beeb.
One big company I worked for had a team of workers who did nothing but the displays, growing the plants and bringing them to flower for the day.

The past couple of years I've watched the show gardens every day on freeview by pressing the red button, it was channel 300 and something, but I can't seem to get it this year {cry} is it just me? They keep saying press the red button on cable and sattellite, does that mean you only get it now if you pay?

I quite fancied going but not prepared to pay the extortionate entrance fees. I think its far too expensive. Sad, because there are so many who would like to go but cant afford it. {cry}
I like watching it on`t telly though.

Some of the gardens look fantastic when you see them on telly, would be much nicer to see it in person.

The Leeds Council exhibition of the canal looked really nice, together with another Yorkshire one showing an old potting shed and some lovely yorkshire stone.

 I think you ardent RHS supporters might not be impressed, but personally I enjoyed the television programme (quite a few months ago) of James May and his plastercine exhibition for the Chelsea Flower Show last year. I thought it looked nice.
