I'm another avid reader, spent my whole life doing things one handed cos a book was always in the other one. Famous Five, Chalet School, and I too wanted to go to boarding school as I was an only one and thought it would be fantastic. Then I went on to John Buchan and Fu Manchu. I still have all my old favourites ^b:

Black Beauty was a book that made such an impression on me really. Shed many tears too. Still ranks in my 'best book ever' list!
National Velvet, another favourite.

I was a regular visitor to the local library, sometimes going every day.

My mum had some Princess annuals that were hers ( late 50's, early 60's?). I grew up reading those, and her Mallory towers books, and so many more. I was, and still am, a bit of a bookworm.

I'd forgotten to put Milly Molly Mandy in my list, lovely books.

I've still got Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Little Women books which were also favourites.

I also had a lot of Noddy Books, then went on to Enid Blyton as well.

I grew out of 'Stories', moved on to I-Spy Books and 'The Observer Book of Whatever', Ian Allen Trainspotting Books and by my Teens I was Non-Fiction.

I still have a couple of Ian Allen Books and his Badge !!

Odhu Ntingo - Richard. We once went to a big I-Spy gathering in York. Did London with the I-Spy book, OH still has one of his. When we got our first caravan I bought him an I-Spy caravans and motorhomes book. Got most of the vans, but a lot of motorhomes not spotted.

that was one of the books we covered in English literature in high school - I thought it was a bit brutal for a children's book (but probably having to pick it to pieces in school put me off reading it for enjoyment)

Growing up in South Africa in the 1960s, alternate entertainment was lacking (no tv, no telephones, local shops etc. We only went to the cinema on a Saturday night because we had to drive there as we had no public transport) but we did have a local library and I must have read most of the children's books at some point. I remember the Famous Five and the Secret Seven books. My brother was given a load of Hardy Boys books - I read those too but I remember the books smelled old and musty. I don't recall reading the Nancy Drew series (maybe the library didn't have them) Other books I remember include Black Beauty and the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

I never read the Hardy or Nancy Drew books but enjoyed the tv series of them. I agree about Lord of the flies, we too did it at school, strange book for us 12 year olds. Black Beauty still makes me weep buckets when I get to Ginger's death {cry}
The Pink Ladies..Audrey,Ingrid-Bergman,Madeleline,Norma-Jean,Dora,Janice,Jo,Robyn,Chrissy and Joyce
The Peds…Mork,Mindy,Bell,Saphire &
