Non-frugal, as I have a recipes that I make rarely (Christmas pud & sticky ginger cake). They use bicarb and/or baking soda and both come in much bigger tubs than they used to, with fairly short dates on them. So I never have one 'in date' when I want it.

one use is to gently neutralise acids:

- particularly useful for adding to fish ponds to raise the water pH (dose should be slowly added in small amounts at a time so as not to change the water chemistry too quickly otherwise fish go into shock/can die) It works by acting as a buffer with the carbonate / carbonic acid (from CO2) in water.

I use it at work to neutralise acidic solvent waste before it is pooled in the main waste for specialist disposal.

Its good to put a tablespoon or so down the sink & then pour white vinegar down, it fizzes & helps to keep the drain clear. Pour boiling hot water down after about 10mins.

I also use it in a white vinegar solution with a few drops of lemon juice put into a spray bottle & clean my bathroom & kitchen with it. Taps come up lovely!

The 'with vinegar fizz' is useful for lifting stains from carpets and fabrics.

Have also used it in water to wipe over pongy fridge and freezer or in powder form sprinkled onto a cat-ty carpet, left a while, then hoovered up to freshen.

I use it to clean the toilets )loo( We have a septic tank so can't use a lot of products but I put some bicarb in and leave for a while before giving it a good scrub with the toilet brush. As previously said it's also good with white vinegar to unblock the drains. I use white vinegar for loads of stuff too like descaling the kettle/iron and use it with a few drops of essence oil as a fabric conditioner. Dead cheap too as only £1 from Wilkies!!
I really got into home made cleaning products a while ago as I don't really like using chemicals around the house if I can help it.

OH would have said "but it is a chemical"
Know what you mean though - no idea what chemicals are in commercial products, at least bicarb has been around a while.
