Cherries

t's a bumper year for cherries. Yesterday I picked 14lbs off the tree in our front garden. They're morellos so you can't eat them raw, but they're fantastic in jam, pies, and ice cream. Half of ours became jam last night, the ice cream machine is hard at work as I type and there re 4 blind-baked pastry shells waiting for me to buy arrowroot so I can make them into cherry pies. 4-year-old Sam helped me to pit some of the cherries, and my husband Ed helped me with the rest when the kids were in bed. We sat side by side at the kitchen table pitting cherries, it was a nice way to spend part of an evening.

I looked up the price of cherries at Tesco and we had 44 worth of cherries. That's great.

Ours did well too. The birds ate all the Black ones but they left far more whites and morellos than usual.
