Good bye TV.

Post by Orfy »

Has any one else ditched the TV?

I got fed up with the garbage being spewed out a few years ago and sent the Licence back.

It's freed up a little money and lots of time.

I still have a TV for watching DVDs on.

It's funny when new visitors come and they can't figure out why my living room looks different. No TV.

Hi Orfy

It's fairly common thing to do around these parts (DTL). We give up every spring for 7 weeks - the kids protest but get over it. We find when we put the TV back on, we are much more selective about what we watch, instead of just leaving it on all the time with drivel pouring out.

Not sure I could go without all year round, that takes more dedication than I have. Well done to you and yours )t'

Effie,

That sounds like a good compromise.

It does help that I don't have kids.
I think that kids can get a lot from it if monitored.

I'm lucky enough that I have experienced some of the things that I used to watch on TV.

Too busy to watch of an evening, so mostly we watch the news or anything that is pointed out that we record, like the Kennel Club programme recently. If we do watch it is usually documentaries can't be doing with soaps and the like.
But I must say the Olympics were riveting and we did watch as much as we could of that.

Interesting. I watch TV every day, but I'm sure I never watch more than two hours. I have certain things I like to watch like Dragons Den, University Challenge, some Documentaries etc. basically no programme more than an hour long. NOT Soaps !

On that basis I could go without TV and just see them on BBC iplayer and others I guess.

It's a big step.

I know two homes with no TV, both more 'senior' people. But the Radio has substituted and they will sit for hours like someone else would with TV; The Archers etc.

Thing is that TV's are really cheap forms of entertainment nowadays. Years ago everything was Rent (Radio Rentals, Rediffusion etc). A TV Set for around £100, a few years back unheard of proportionately.
The technology is reducing the carbon footprint etc.

I wish you well.

PS - I assume you still have to pay a Licence?

No you don't need a licence if you are not connecting a tuner to a screen.

I have an aerial and a cable box. but the TV is no where near them.
You don't need a licence for Iplayer or the radio.
I get my news from the Net and the Radio. (no newspapers)
I get all my experiences from real life or finding/reading about people who have the knowledge/experience I am interested in.
You'd be surprised how many people are willing to teach/tell if you are willing to learn and listen.

I have met many wonderful people since I stopped sitting in front of the TV.

I have friends all over the world.

I'm not saying other people should do it or would want to .
But it works for us. My wife realised that 2 hours of soaps a day does no one any good.
I've asked if she'd like it back and a few years on it's still NO.

We do tend to watch alot more TV in the winter months, i must say since having the girls we are never indoors before 9pm most evenings!
We did however watch alot of the olympics this time around, i have a son 22 who still lives at home he has his own tv etc in his bedroom, we dont do soaps either, but OH loves the history channel and nat geo!

I dont think we will ever be able to give up the tv for good!

Actually, according to the threatening letters they've been sending me, you do need a licence if you have the means to watch tv on the internet, via the I-player, or a mobile phone, and for the radio.

Check it out. I did.
It's only to watch live or nearly live TV.
They are trying to frighten you.
Seriously give them a call. If the person is not sure tell them to find someone who is sure.
They treat every one like they are cheating.
On my third visit I suggested they come visit and meet the dogs.
They told me they'd fetch the police if they wanted to check my house..
I forgot to tell them the dogs would only lick them to death.

hmmm....in that case...
I've phoned them a few times, told them I don't have one, and they're still sending me letters.
Like this one, although it's not the most threatening one yet..

thanks very much orfy, I shall continue to ignore their letters.

I stopped getting them around a year ago.
I think they sent me 3 or 4.

If you are not sure then please contact them.

I wouldn't want to end up in court saying "But Orfy said"

This may help you to check for yourself.

You do not need a television licence to watch television programmes on the current version of the BBC iPlayer. You will need to be covered by a TV licence if and when the BBC provides a feature that enables you to watch 'live' TV programmes on any later version of the BBC iPlayer which has this option... A 'live' TV programme is a programme which is watched or recorded at the same time (or virtually the same time) as it is being broadcast... [etc]

hope that helps.

I don't have a tele, and it's great. Didn't have one for years, then I got one, and a licence, for a year, now I have gone back to no tele.

I watch Dragons Den on iplayer, and Last of the Summer Wine, but that's it. There is a web site dedicated to people who don't have a tele, quite interesting.

no tv no licence

I too don't have a TV - in fact, I've not had one for 17 years now.

Never missed it.

Two things I've noticed, though. If someone says: "Did you see XXX on TV?", it's quickest and easiest to answer "no". This then prompts them to tell you what you missed.

The other thing is that I find it exceptionally difficult to sit and watch something for longer than 15 minutes. A DVD, for example. I'm just not used to it, and get bored. It's awkward when I go away to someone's house and they expect us all to sit down and watch an hour's TV programme - I just keep wanting to get up and make coffee all round without waiting for the ad breaks!

I'm probably more worldly than a lot of my colleagues - I use the Internet (news on the BBC website), radio (I love LBC, the London-based talk radio station), and buy a national newspaper each day.
