Make do and mend

Post by Meanqueen »

Have you bought a pair of those fleece lined bootee slipper type things? They're rubbish, aren't they, the soles fall off in a month. Lovely and warm round the ankles but the toes start peeping through. Here's my remedy for getting a bit more wear out of them.
Photobucket
Cut the feet off a pair of old tights, and cut each leg off just below the gusset, then make sure the detached sole is in place and put each leg of the tights over the whole of the slippers, starting with the ankle bit because that is the narrowest part. Then tie a knot at the toe end.

Depends what you have on your floor I suppose. I am carpeted throughout except for the kitchen, I don't slip on the cushion floor in there. If it doesn't work for you, it's only cost you a pair of holey tights that you were going to throw out anyway.

The title of this thread 'make do and mend' reminds me that as kids my granny would be darning socks, most elderly men at the time were able to repair shoes on a last in the house. Televisions and hoovers lasted decades! Clothes were patched and repaired, or some even cut down for other members of the family, mums kept their babies clothes to hand on down to the next family member.

Do you think we will revert back fully to this way of thinking, or have we gone to far in the other direction for that to happen?

Modern mass produced shoes seem to be almost impossible to repair with their moulded soles and heels.

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.
