The kettle really needed descaled and all I had was malt vinegar.

It stank the house out and I had to have an emergency trip out to get sodium bicarbonate to remove the taint! Of course, we had visitors pop in for a cup of tea that day

I'm going to stock up on citric acid to avoid extra flavours in my hot drinks in future.

Oh dear heebiejeebie!
I would only use citric acid....I get it in bulk so am very lucky and use it from descaling to cleaning the loo.
The vinegar and bicarb is very good as an all round cleaner (mix it with lots of water first)

Where do you get citric acid from - the chemist? Is that what you ask for?

Living in a hard water area we have the same sort of problems.

Phil
You can get it at the chemist but it is usually £1 for a small packet and they look at you strangely as it is also used for 'other' practices.
I get it in a 25kg pack and pay approx £1.50kg. I think you can get it on the auction site or else use a search engine for a wholesaler.

I've used malt vinegar several times with no problems. in fact I put it in neat, just enough to cover the element and just left it overnight.
Next morning rinse it out with cold water and away we were.
