advice needed to make door in hedra fence panel

Post by Bollybarb »

Hi, i've decided to have some more chickens and need to beef up the run. i've decided that rather than lift the panel each time to get into the run i would like to have a door. Any ideas on how to do it gratfully recieved.
thank you xx

Hi Barb, there are a couple of ways I would go about it. If you aren't bothere about the whole thing being square the you could move the two side panels out by just over a foot at the front then refix your front panel at one end to one of the sides. This would leave a gap at one end of the front panel wide enough for a gate.
I would also fix a length of timber above the gate fastened to the side and front panel to keep the structure solid.
The other way would be to cut a gateway through the wire. You would have to make a wooden frame (assuming you don't have access to a welder) to hang the gate on and a wooden frame for the gate itself. You should be able to use the wire you cut out for the gate.

Thanks for your answers, i think moving one panel out and puttinga door in the gap would be the best move. I couldn't think how i was going to cut those panels!! and i don't have a grinder or welder just a reluctant diy'er OH!! But i think we could manage a door between us. I also want to put a skirt around the run using metal wire whats best (so i don't buy the wrong stuff) I'm thinking similar to an eglu skirt.

I would go for 1" x 1" - the other they could get head/feet injury. Tin snips/side cutters - to cut the stuff. )t'

Go skip raiding for an old door or ask your local double glazing firm if you can have an old one that they are replacing. Buy two 3" fence posts and sink them far enough apart to allow the door to sit between them. hang the door from one post and fit timber battens to act as a door stop. Cable tie the fencing to the posts )t'

Just found this site where you can buy hinges for heras panels, they also sell pedestrian gates, bit pricey but you might find a second hand one at a local heras fencing rental outlet.

Hi Bollybarb,

Bit late with a response, but I have only just seen your post..

I have a heras pannel coop, we built a door by cutting a section out of one of the pannels and attaching a wooden frame. Door was made from timber & mesh.

Here is the pen, when we first built it. It has doubled in size since but gives you an idea of how we did it:
