Who knows a bit about what ?

Post by Richard »

I know there are some pretty well qualified people amongst us who would be only too pleased to hear of a problem or maybe discuss something they have been told.

There's also a good selection of seasoned DIYers amidst the Members, so why not use this thread to tell us what your DIY Talent is.

Could we keep this thread strictly on topic please and just post 'what we're good at', it'll make anyone reading it a lot simpler to find someone who maybe able to help (Sorry, I have deleted some which were off-topic)

Cheers, Richard

The phrase 'Jack of all trades, master of none' applies to me.
I can fix cars, the older ones that is, none of this modern stuff with computer chips.
I can rewire parts of a house, safely but not perhaps to the latest legislation.
I can mend busted pipes, but in a lot of cases what water does is a mystery to me.
I can lay bricks, almost straight. I can measure something and most of the time, it fits.
I can slap paint about and it covers most of what I was trying to paint.
I can cook a meal, and no-one has died yet as a result of my efforts.
Most of the plants I put in my garden survive.
My toolkit is extensive, and I know how to use most of it.
I have, in the past, got myself out of trouble at very little expense instead of calling an expert at a price I cannot afford.
Is this what you had in mind Richard?

I am a bit of an all-rounder having had experience both professionally and domestically in quite a lot of the sort of things that need doing in and around the house. Like Rodders above I am not qualified and don’t know that current regulations are but I did do a four year apprenticeship (a long time ago) and have years of engineering experience across a wide range of disciplines. Don’t ask me to hang wall paper, I will refuse.

Sewing, gardening, plumbing, rough carpentry, most animal care...

About the same as the last two posts, can cover most diy matters and light building work along with some car/van repairs. As for gardening thats my work line trained as a gardener/groundsman when I left school.

I was a harmacist for 25 years, in a previous life, so have picked up a certain amount of know-how on treating minor ailments with simple remedies.
I've also taught Bridge, and am happy to answer questions from learners.
And we've had to learn a fair bit about horse problems over tha past 4 years.

Trained and qualified in horticulture and early years childcare.
For other things, like the other posts I will have a go at most things. Been doing it ourselves for years, but unqualified, in cooking, sewing, crafting, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plumbing, white goods repairs, hairdressing, dry stone walling, chimney sweeping - basically never been able to afford to get someone else to do it.
There was an old tv quote - "I can do that - gis a job" - thats me :?

My forte is horses....for over 50yrs. Animals in general. Indian cooking. I am often told "alot of common sense"....not sure though. Oh and definitely flying business class. So really not alot of use at all.

I spent the first twenty years of my working life as a car machanic, but like roddelmae I'm no good if they come with chips! +elf+
Pretty good at splitting pallets into useable timber, and a mine of useless information! sile}

A bit of most things really, carpentry first and second fix, electrics up to a point that new regs will let me, plumbing but not central heating, interior tiling, decorating, mainly painting.

Most of my work is general maintenance for letting agents and maintenance of communal areas for block management companies.

What I can't do I pass onto a subbie, I still control the work and ensure the quality is consistent, I have plasterers, sparks, plumber (Gas Safe) cleaners, roofers, locksmiths, garage door installers, chippy's, painters, carpet fitters that I can call on for bigger jobs/jobs beyond my skill set.

On the subject of car mechanics (sorry if )ot: ) has anyone made the same mistake that I made once. I was drawing a half-shaft from an old-fashioned live axle, and found the garage wall in the way! yike*
