2012 carrot bed!

Post by Mallard »

I used my old leaky water butt bottom to see if carrots would grow in gro-bag compost, with a shovel of manure in the bottom! Every seed has germinated and they're doing much better than the planted out ones! :-D

This is for next season, a 2ft X 4ft planter. It's mainly pallet, but I have to wait now until a 4ft pallet comes my way to fill the sides! Looks a bit like a single bed! )grin2(

Mallard - are you going to use your beddypalletbed for carrots then? I was wondering as I still haven't planted up mine yet and did think about using it for carrots.

My main thing is to make it fairly cost effective and I wouldn't get enough carrots to cover the cost of the compost I used. }hairout{ On the other hand, I do use carrots.

The bed isn't big enough Perchy, and I have loads of onions already. I will be interested to know Mallard - will you have to use bought compost in your tubbybedtub?

Helen are your beddy things deep I can't remember ? I just put rubbley stuff in the bottom of too deep containers to save on the amount of compost I have to use, could you do that, its so wasteful filling up with compost when what you are growing takes up only 1/2 of the depth of the container. ps I dont think I would put onions and carrots together in a container as one needs plenty of water and the other needs little , ok in the ground where it can drain away easier I think

I've two other containers recently planted with carrots (I like carrots )grin2( ) as well as two hit and miss rows in the plot!
I use cheap gro-bags, AllDee, Lydell etc, and I'm using up my excess manure to layer the bottoms.
The new one will be used next season, it's just when I have an idea I start looking for material! :-D
I'm trying spring onions in another bu..... tub!
