Preparing exterior door for varnishing

Post by hennypenny »

I have 2 oak doors and bought them new.
A guy I know varnished them with one coat for me a couple of years ago with Ronseal but they are needing doing again.
Do I need to wash them down and then varnish them again or do they need sanding etc?
Thanks.

I have always done the painting and decorating in our home and can only say what I would do. If the doors are outside doors, I would wash them down with a solution of sugar soap (directions on the box) and dry off. They will be quite dirty. I would then rub down with the lightest of sand papers before re-varnishing.
I'm sure they will look great when done )t'
