You can run lights in series, but if the bulbs are in an exposed area, I would use bulkhead type lights, to protect them and you. If they are indoors its fine, the ceiling roses will have extra connections in them to link into.
I'm not a qualified electrician, I do have a good basic knowledge of wiring etc. You should always double check anyones advice, but if you need any help, feel free to pm me.

Pretty much what I was going to say, the wiring is fairly straight forward but running them outside is not always the easiest thing.

You can buy bulkhead lights such as this

and run the cable in conduit to minimise the risk of getting a shock.

When buying a fitting look at the IP (ingress protection) rating

http://www.cablesystems.co.uk/ip-definitions.php

Any lighting run outside should be protected by an RCD and protected with a suitable fuse, 5amp for what you are proposing.

I have to say that electrical work is quite complicated now and running any extra load on your domestic system should be designed and installed by a qualified sparks to be 100% safe and compliat with regulations.

Above info is for information only, I am not a sparks.

Thanks for all the advice, finished the wiring this morning, and hey presto it works. The wiring and bulb holders are fitted neatly tucked nuder the roof, cant wait till tonight now to see how it looks.
