Chopping board queryChopping board queryNot sure where to put this, but middle son is wanting OH to make him a chopping board. OH thinks that oak is unsuitable, and doesn't know what woods are used.
I have given oldest son my Father's chopping board, and from memory it looked like deal, but not certain. I think our draining board at home was deal, we have moved on, haven't we. I've had a quick glance on Google, and both oak and olive wood are mentioned by manufacturing firms. Mary Berry once said that uses a plate to chop on, and I use the inside of a glass casserole lid! Any advice is appreciated. Re: Chopping board querySorry no advice, not a handy person.
But mine is glass. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: Chopping board queryWendy - middle son has had glass ones, and isn't keen!
Re: Chopping board queryI would say you can make one from any close grained wood providing the wood is well seasoned and hard. (Not neccessarily a Hardwood)
A wood that is hard will get less deeply scored and be easier to sand flat again after it gets a lot of use than a soft wood. Your hubby will know what I mean as not all Hardwoods are hard and not all Softwoods are soft I would avoid Yew, Laburnum etc. The woods that are considered poisonous just to be on the safe side. Beech is another good wood to make chopping boards from. Hope that's some help. Dom Ali Woks My World
Re: Chopping board queryThanks, Dom. Will pass info on to OH.

Re: Chopping board queryOH could consider Hornbeam (ironwood) ..
I am old and wise, because I was young and stupid!.
Re: Chopping board queryIf you can get hold of any, Maple is apparently very good too as it's close grained.

OH has found a piece of beech, which he has glued and cramped to make an oblong board, so do hope number two son appreciates all the advice and work which has gone into its manufacture.
