paint that stains won't dissolve in

Post by Mo »

Help, I have some stains on my ceiling.
I tried to cover one over with emulsion paint. It might have been from a leak in the water pipe under the upstairs floor. Each time I painted over it, it got fainter but bigger. We had some rot around a dormer window & OH splashed creosote around, which came through the plaster and we couldn't paint over that - white paint with pale brown splodges.

There are more stains from a mended leak in the loft. My daughter found a dried up mouse in a trap in the loft, and that has stained the ceiling too.

What will work to cover them?

I bought some special stain stop paint, which is specially made for such jobs, although I seem to remember my father in law using either gloss paint or undercoat.

hi P.Penn,
My OH suggests mixing up some PVA diluted with water and painting that over the stain and then paint over the top when dry, or alternatively try some oil based light paint ... If not buy a tin of barrier paint which is specifically for those sort of problems.
Good luck ... May all your stains disappear!

You can get stain block paint in an aerosol for a fiver, or as above, if you have some spare oil based paint, that should work (I hope the water leak is already fixed!)
