Hanging Baskets

Post by secret squirrel »

Would anyone suggest I put my hanging baskets in the greenhouse, over the winter. They have pelagoniums in them.
If I can over winter them, I would quite like too as they are rather pretty and it will save me a bit of cash rather than to replace them.
I also have quite a large on in a pot, which has already gone ito the greenhouse. Should I water it, and if so, how often. Thanks

Even in a greenhouse, pelagoniums & geraniums don't always survive especially if there is a very cold spell which will bring temperatures down to sub-zero unless you are prepared to heat the greenhouse. If you can repot them and bring them indoors onto the windowsills for light and warmth, they may do a lot better. Underwater over winter is the key (that is, enough to stop the plant dying of thirst, but not too much that its roots sit in cold damp soil where they are likely to rot) Increase water levels in spring when the plants appear to be stirring into life.

I have to confess I don't cosset flowering plants so have no experience

Ok, I've just found a link to the RHS advice of overwintering which should be much more useful:

Hi

I usually cut mine back a bit as they can get a bit leggy and then in the spring they will form strong shoots.
