Covered bonfire

Post by newto »

A while ago I saw a WWII revisited type program ( The wartime kitchen & garden (I think)).

anyway, they built a large pile of the rubbish, covered it in soil, and had a small
chimney type vent at the top and a vent at the bottom.

This would be ideal for me as there is a fair bit of woody stuff to get rid of, which would take far too long in a compost heap (and haven´t space for 2)

The stated advantages, were that it helped get potash back into soil, sterilised the soil on top, and obviously no fires burning to attract enemy aircraft ( don´t think I have to worry about the third one at present :-D )
It´s probably the only way I could safely burn the woody rubbish as nowhere is less than 6ft (ish) from a fruit tree or a window. and no sparks to fly off and set fire to local mountain( as did a neighbour a few years ago)

Has anyone ever done this?
Any advice? pros? cons?
