Made a wee bed today against the back fence and looking for ideas on what to put in it. Flowers, not veg. Cold windy position facing west. Any ideas ?

Ornamental grasses after pretty wind resistant. They come in all sorts of colours and sizes and have lovely seed heads.

Mix the 2 and have a swathe of different coloured grasses. Some are tall and firm and others are low lying and compact. They make lovely swishing sounds when caught by the breeze. Another `sound` plant is bamboo, but you have to keep it watered well in the first year.

old fashioned pinks are quite sturdy little plants. I was going to be funny and say as you made a wee bed try sweet PEES.

The grasses sound ideal if the area is very windy as most tall flowers will just get battered down. If you want more colour, why not use some of the lovely old fashioned flowering ground cover plants like baby pinks and creeping thyme just to mention a couple.

If you watch the shopping channels, there are some `very good` deals on `pinks` at the moment. No doubt they will be on again. They were 20 plants for less than £20, which I thought was excellent. I am very tempted to be honest.
