Can anyone identify these for me?

Post by Knikitta »

I thought they were Geraniums of some sort when they flowered, but now I am not so sure... I just collected a ton of seeds of them and I want to be sure I label my packet correctly...

They do spread like mad, but I like that kind of gardening, mine have seeded in the stones and round slabs )t'

Yes, I left them where they are as it is a Cottage Garden and my rental agreement states I am only allowed to 'maintain' the garden, I just wanted some seeds for my next place! )t'

They don't always come up as true colours so mine have been lovely a mixture of shades of violet, lilac etc, I keep mine in school money envelopes )t'

There are many different shades of pink, mauve and blue. The wild version is dark blue, small flowered and single (not double or frilly like the pictures above). If you buy a packet of seeds you will (probably) get what the picture on the packet shows. But when you collect seed it is more chancy (interesting ?). Over the years they will revert back to the small blue version.
This pictue shows a mixture. The dark blue will become more common, over time.
This is the wild version

Ours are still a huge range of types and colours, and I 'steal' seed whenever I see some!

I've saved the seeds from mine, but the plots flower expert says they usually revert back to basic colours!

I've found that over the years of saving seed / self-seeding we've got more of the basic colours and less of the fancy ones. We still get a fair number of dark purple ones and the really deep rich reds though.

Still, it's worth saving seed and then a few years down the line buying a new plant or packet, to add variety to the mix. Things that seed themselves are good value (unless you are a bedding plant perfectionist who want maximum beauty per square inch).
