Nasturiums - how tall can you grow them.

Post by fabindia »

We have a rather plain wall that backs on to our garden. It is the side our neighbour's garage. This year, I decided to add a bit of green and colour, so I planted sweet peas and nasturiums. I thought that the nasturiums would give a bit of cover lower down and the sweet peas would give a bit of colour higher up.

Look what happened:

Nasturtiums will climb as high as their little feeler things will allow them. There is also climbing ones. As for sweet peas I think a lot of people have had a dreadful year for them.

I have had the same happen with my Nasturtium and Sweet peas this year.

The Nasturtiums are going wild and have climbed up the sweet pea canes and then down the other side and are now scrambling along the ground and I have to keep chasing them back to the canes.

The Sweet Peas however (I have six different varieties) have all been appalling. Growing no higher than a foot, and flowering has been poor too. I have, and still am, getting a few flowers here and there, but nothing like previous years.
I swear I'll have a permanent imprint of my palm over my face from reading forums.

How very true, our sweet peas were very poor indeed this year.

My sweet peas have been great this year again!

I gave up on nasturtiums years ago as the caterpillars love them so much! mind you, perhaps they would be good companion plants for brassicas?

Now that's a good idea...I want to grow some Nasturtiums so I can pickle the seeds.

I only grow them as companion plants, same reason for why I grow marigolds! :D

My nasturtiums have been rubbish this year. We have a really ugly retaining wall in the garden, and I rely on the nasturtiums and morning glories to brighten it up - both have been miserable failures this year - stunted and short and just rubbish :?
Yours are lovely though Mike )t'
