I've always used malt but thats cos i don't have any white vinegar ..suppose apple cider vinegar would work as well

As with Wasp sting,rub a raw onion on the area.
When Irish eyes are smiling,they are usually up to mischief.

Also my Mum always put a half a raw onion by the side of the bed if we had a cold as she said that it would draw the germs away from you.

Your mum was smart! I recently read, as if it is a new discovery, to leave a half onion in the house so it will absorb cold germs! It works!
