Does copper tape work?

Post by HedgeHugger »

I can see that my strawberries are growing nicely, but unfortunately so can the slimey critters.
I see their trails around the planters and the odd chomp out of the leaves :(
Does copper tape work? Does it keep the monsters off?
Slug pellets not an option.

I grew brocolli once. I watched it grow all the way until it was nearly ripe to pick. Unfortunately, the slugs and snails had all been sitting around with their cutlery and napkins too, little gits!

They are not nabbing the strawbs!!

It works, but you have to make sure that there are no gaps, and no plants over-hanging and creating a 'bridge' for the slugs to bypass the tape.

Had checked fleabay and found 16 metres for the price of 4 on Amazon.

Shall get some now and try to make sure they can't crawl down any leaves off the fence.

What to do if they get their little bungee ropes out though!

I think that slugs will be a big problem this year given how wet and damp it has been lately.

Anything is worth a try I guess.

Yes as others have said. But also check for slugs already in the soil and climbing up through pots. I found the slug stop matting with metalic thread in also helps but is also expensive.

If you have any old copper wire from old electrics you can strip the plastic off and wind that around pots and planters.

You could try some grit too - they don't like anything sharp. Or the classic straw?....

I put straw around the stawberries last year. I'd read it was good for keeping moisture in the soil, and resting strawbs that were growing on. What I hadn't read about, but experienced, was that in straw you get lots of seeds that sprout!! I had loads of it sprouting all over the strawberry planters :)
Spent ages pulling it all up.

I put DE all around a planter last year and I think that worked a little (until it rained). I get plenty of egg shells too. OO lots of things to try again now. Thanks :)
