Hibiscus question

Post by wendy »

I have just bought 2 hardy Hibiscus Syriacus they are in largish pots. They say they are 3 years old
Not sure if I can leave them outside in these pots. Leave them inside or plant into larger ones.
Any ideas, folks ?

Were they outside when you bought them Wendy or inside. If they are 3 years old I would have thought they would be hardy enough even though they are a hardy plant to put outside.
Will they remain in a pot or will you put them in the ground. If you want them in the ground plant them now whilst the weather is relatively warm enough to enable them to settle. If you are going to keep them in a pot I would re-pot them into a bigger pot but keep them in a sheltered area until they establish.

I always thought they were outdoor plants {rofwl}

We used to have a beautiful one called "bluebird" but we lost that one year when we had a very dry Summer.

We bought a lovely white one back in May to plant where we buried Mishka, didn't even think to look at how old it was, but it's only about 2ft tall and seems to be doing well.

I always assume anything hardy is going to be okay :-D

Thank you ladies.
I think they have been outside. I bought them from You Garden.
I don't intend putting in the ground, so I think I had best sort out larger pots and put them in there. Just need to find a sheltered spot.

Or wrap a fleece around them when it gets cold until they establish

Hi. I have a bluebird too. Have had it for years and it's on a windy corner. Flowering beautifully at this moment! I think you should plant it out. Things left outside in pots can die of root chill in the winter.
Bluebird is one of the fussiest. Most of the others are hardier and much quicker growing. I don't think any syriacus would be able to stay in a pot for long.
