My replacement layer chickens have all reached egg producing age, they free range in an area at the front of the house and are accommodated in one of our outside dog kennels overnight. We have found the odd egg or two in their nest box but all ten of them have been shouting to inform us they have laid but we could never find their eggs anywhere.
Today, we were overseeing breeding two of our goats when we saw a hen on top of the hay bales then as if by magic she disappeared. Investigations led us to discover a hole/cave in a lucerne bale at the bottom of the stack. We recovered over 40 eggs!
Time to move them out to the barn and field then our Orpington chicks can take over their kennel and (of course) omelet for tea!
