returning a bird to the flock

Post by Dave »

after fight 1 i had to separate a bird that got beat up
the next day fight 2 had to separate another bird
bird 1 died a few days latter
bird 2 fully recovered less a few feathers but was keeped on her own but in a sectioned off bit of the run
fight 3 next bird moved out and died a few days latter
today after doing a new restructure of the coop/run a added
bird 2 back to the flock one bird seemed to be quite nasty and she has a mate
both are now on their own(see how they like it)
all the rest of the flock seem to be ok with their old mate back in the flock
i have had all the birds since good friday the first fight started 3 weeks ago with the last one a week and a half ago
how long shall i keep the bullys locked up?
why should they suddenly start fighting?

returning a bird to the flock

Hi Dave and welcome
Sorry to hear about your problem. I had 2 pairs and as they wouldn't get on placed in separate runs. Then one started attacking her mate of 1 year - it turned out that she was ill and was taking out on her mate.
I have heard that keeping the bully alone (but letting her see the others) for a few days works.
I would think that as this is happening and then the girl dies is because they know that she is weak. This can be a sad part of nature. Keep us posted.
Best wishes Anna

the two birds that died
both of the birds had badly damaged vents due to (i presume) being constatly pecked before i got to them
the vents were dribling white stuff but they both seemed ok at first
but a supose infection sets in
the second bird seemed to be making a slight improvment but then sliped away
i have started to hang up some aloe vera leaves as these are suposed to be
quote:
aloe vera has natural antibiotic,anti-inflammatory
and antisepic properties and is said to boost the immune system
many poultry keepers claim that it is beneficial for their birds.
anyone else heard of this?
i have just been down a checked all looks good in the coop
the two outside in the naughty room look well pis****o**

Hi Dave,

Maybe a rather bland reply, but for how long? As long as it takes I guess.
Problem is that I'm sure you have to work and can't be there the whole time, but you can only do what you're doing.

It's a long time they've been at it isn't it.

But, what you're doing is great and I look forward to hearing some positive stuff.

It's good that this problem is raised often as I'm sure it will help others.

But that doesn't bring back your chicken and I really feel for you.

Take care, Richard

returning a bird to the flock!

 Hi Dave,
been reading your dilema with interest.I have encountered this myself and lost several birds as a result,I put 4 ducks in with the chooks and all was ok for a day or so then mayhem broke out so had to seperate the parties.Personally, for me,chooks are just like some people you meet,ie they can be bullies to weaker souls.I would keep the bullies seperate, but I realise this is not always practical.
Anyhow,best of luck!!!!
