Don't give sugar for a yeast infection! Sugar causes yeast infections and will make them worse! Sugar feeds the yeast! Try yogurt with a capsule of probiotics emptied and mixed into it and a little extra virgin coconut oil mixed into it as a quick burning energy source. Coconut oil also contains caprylic acid which fight yeast. If an elderly hen has a sour crop massage it to be sure it is not impacted. Be careful not to give her foods which impact the crop easily--hard peels, stringy grasses and stems of greens. The coconut oil should help with the impaction. If it is severely impacted you may have to do surgery, or have surgery done on it If you can't afford the vet, or find one capable of doing it, there should be instructions on how to do it on the internet. Gail Damerow's, "The Chicken Health Handbook" tells how to do it. Put raw, finely minced garlic in the feed as a preventative as well as, well made, live sugarless yogurt or kefir .Kefir is easier to make than yogurt, it is more active and cheaper if homemade. As the hen recovers you can use chopped boiled egg with some lettuce and probiotics and some cooked whole grain rice, and a little extra virgin coconut oil. If you are sure the hen is well enough to have no ulcers, a clove of garlic finely chopped into the food kills yeast and helps prevent the infection from returning. Yogurt and probiotics will help keep the infect from returning. Be sure not to give a compromised hen--older or immunocompromised, sugary foods like fruit, even corn may be a problem, especially in hot weather. Our program for our hens is to give probiotics or a spoonful of yogurt or kefir in the feed and garlic three days in a row each week. We use powdered turmeric which is available cheaply in quantity from Indian groceries, and 1/4 tsp per chicken powdered green clay (see the free e-book on anti-oxidant, mineral clay on drplechner.com) as an antioxidant and source of minerals. It helps to alkalize the gut, making it resist coccidiosis better.
