No wonder my birdbath ends up a mountain of ice in winter when I keep pouring
boiling water on it! I found a good article here with all the theories about Mpemba

The other thing to do is put a stick in the water, it will take longer to freeze around it and the ice will always be weaker.

Nice for the birds to have water all day but in reality as long as they get it once or twice a day they would soon adapt.
