I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please!
I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please!Hi, haven't posted for a while, but in the Autumn I got 2 more hens to accompany my 2 Copper Black Maran girls. As a bit of central heating for the coop for winter I got 2 gorgeous baby buff Orpingtons. They are now around 36/37 weeks old and beautiful - the sweetest natures too, very calm. Anyway, they have grown hu-uge, no eggs yet, but i put that diwb to the weather. But I was concerned that one has fair sized head gear, very red and proud too, and slightly curved tail feathers. Well my fears were right - we had a strangled sounding attempt at several cockadoodledoos last 2 days at sunrise. The breeder says she will swap him, phew! However I'm unsure about the 2nd one - I THINK it's a hen - tail feathers seem to sit high and pointy, not droop, is head slightly rounder do you think? Smaller head gear? Still I eggs though. Anyway, I have taken several photos - can you tell me what you think?
cockerel is on the right on this one: This is the possible hen otherway round. Hen tail feathers? Compared to cockerel's: Best of buddies. The cockerel (front) likes to bury his head underneath the other one:
Re: I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please! We've had a good look and are almost certain both are boys.
The neck and saddle feathers looked pointed to us which only happens with boys. Dom & Ali Ali Woks My World
Re: I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please!Oh crumbs! Realised my typo - I meant 0 eggs, not I eggs!
Thanks for having a look - I appreciate everyone's opinion on it. Re: I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please!I'd guess boys too. Orpy hens usually have smaller combs too. They're a hard breed to s.ex when they're young.

They look like lovely boys though. Sarah - slave to Cats Anthony, Elsa and Pippa, Chickens, Heidi, Fleur, Gabby and Marmite, R.I.P Cadbury
Re: I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please!Oh dear. It seems to be the general opinion. Hmm. They are beautiful boys - sadly ones I can't keep though
Re: I Buff Orp cockerel or 2? Opinions on pics please!what a shame, but as they're friendly they'd be good as family garden chooks.
My son's first chicken was an orpy that turned out to be a boy, he loved it & cuddled it every day. I hope you can find them homes. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
