Is it possible for egg shell to change colour?

Post by lilgenie24 »

Hi everyone, can I call on your wisdom?
We got our chickens 2 weeks ago and one of the hens, white with brown flecks, laid pale green eggs. She laid for the first 3 days then no more green eggs. I thought she'd stopped laying due to the heat but this morning I watched her go in to the nest box, several minutes later she was calling loudly. When I checked there was a brown egg, still warm. I know it wasn't there before as I'd just poo picked and retrieved all eggs.
We are feeding them from the same bag of layers pellets that we were given from previous owners. They are having a few fresh veggies from the garden and the odd slug.
Can the shell really change colour, or am I just going mad? >coc<
Thanks, Clare

When they've not laid for a while I've found that the eggs can have more pigment (saved up from the eggs they've not laid).
I wonder if there is extra 'brown' and that's hiding the 'green'.
Do let us know what she lays in the next few days.
