Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?
Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes? Our neighbours gave me a chicken of theirs which died yesterday, they don't know what of. Can I make this into soup? I love 'real' chicken soup .....

Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?Wouldn't fancy it if it had died from blood poisoning. Was it ill beforehand? Sudden death?
In my time I've eaten roadkill, but that was a pheasant, that had been hit by the previous car. Parents saw the opportunity and took it. Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?A big NO

If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?I am sorry but I find three things incredible about this post. Firstly why would anyone want to eat a creature when they have no idea what it had died from, secondly why is this not in the food and drink section and thirdly personally I find it so insensitive to us on here who keep hens as pets, sorry but this is the second time 'eating a hen' has appeared in the WRONG forum.

Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?Sandy, I'm not a vegetarian, mainly for health reasons. Later in life I found that I needed the nutrients which meat supplies for me in a more digestible form.
My ideal is, not to eat meat of animals which have had an unhappy life. It's even better, then, to eat meat from animals which died anyway, which were not killed for me. I eat that with respect, and am grateful to the animal which feeds me. I suppose that it was wishful thinking though, in this case: deep down I suspected that it was not wise, as I did not know what had been wrong with her. Are you a vegetarian? I have respect for that. What I cannot understand is that some people will eat animals, in the form of bacon for instance, as long as they have not known them, and as long as they don't look like animals anymore. Still, it takes all sorts .... I hope this is a discussion which fits in this part of the forum! Love, Annemieke. Love, Annemieke Wigmore, Somerset, UK http://thoughtforfood-aw.blogspot.com
Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes? It matters not a jot if I am or am not a vegeterian, that wasnt my point, I cannot understand why the post is not in the food and drink section as it is about eating?

Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes? Some people who have chickens might like to eat them too I expect, and give me advise. ‘Keeping chickens’ seems, to me, the place to look for this kind of information. ‘Cooking’ is too general. I’m sorry you were upset but it could not be helped.
What do others think about this? Love, Annemieke Wigmore, Somerset, UK http://thoughtforfood-aw.blogspot.com
Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?I agree with Sandy. I too eat meat but this a forum where we keep chickens as beloved pets and I think it is distasteful and insensitive to bring up the question of eating them on here. I would never want to eat a chicken that I have kept and loved and wouldn't dream of offering it to someone else to eat either. I don't usually get involved in this kind of discussion because I follow a rule of "If you have nothing positive to say, say nothing at all" but this is the second time this has come up now and as you have asked for discussion I decided to join in.

What's wrong with discussion? I certainly wasn't nasty, just gave my opinion. Am happy to be criticized too. Love, Annemieke Wigmore, Somerset, UK http://thoughtforfood-aw.blogspot.com
Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?I can see that this was probably posted in the Wrong section.
But Anniemeike asked a question, in good faith and wanted a answer. There are people on this forum that do breed and have chickens as food as well as pets. This is their choice. I personally only had pets. But I think she really doesn't deserve to be treated harshly. It was quite a valuable question, regardless of where it was posted. As if she has eaten a sick chicken. She may have been very sick herself. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk

Re: Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes? Thanks Wendy. I used to be a vegetarian till I had cancer and was left with malabsorption. I found that eating a little meat helped enormously. Now I have a kidney problem which, also, benefits greatly from meat. I eat it only every other day and very small portions. As I said, I eat meat from animals which have had a happy life and which, in the current system, need to be slaughtered, like all the male lambs which are born or for that matter young cockerels. My neighbours look very well after their chickens: they give them names and sell lovely eggs.
I had pigeon recently: they get shot anyway and are more nutricious than the slabs of beef, for instance, which come from specially bred animals. Maybe this should not be in this part of the forum either, but there it is! One thing leads to another. I can see communicating online is not ideal: you have to be much more careful as the other party can't hear and see you. Still, it is an interesting conversation. I've learned to be more careful with what I say. I like the "Head to Tail" approach. This is about having respect for what we eat, "about eating the offal, organ meat, and other usually discarded meats. If the animal’s died for us to eat it, then we have a responsibility to not let any part of it go to waste." See http://readmeatdc.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/from-head-to-tail.html Enough .....
