Virtual ID parade!

Post by Trev62 »

Roll Up! Roll Up! For the ID parade!!!

Free “virtual” beer or wine for for every correct gender identification and second “virtual” drink for your pointers so I can learn for the future.

Out of ten chickens we think we know the correct gender of six of them, the other four..........................we can guess but we are not sure.

So the first two....................

Introducing Blackie.........

Next up Ginge........

Hens or cockerels? And why?

Many thanks

Blacky a boy, Ginge maybe a girl (hopefully)
Blacky has large red wattles and comb and quite thick legs.
Ginge - well definately pinker in combs & wattles, still slightly chunky legs though, the more chooks you can compare with the more the differences show.

I would have guessed that if Blackie is a girl she would be laying, with that red comb. How old is he/sh

I'd say Blackie is a boy. Thick legs, big red comb and downward facing tail feathers. I'd say ginge is a girl. Despite thick legs, a smaller comb and different shaped feathers. That's my guess but I wouldn't put money on it.

I'm inclined to think so too ... but still too early to say. I'm going off their stance (standing tall with head held high on a long neck) and tail feathers that are looking like they could develop into longer ones (that curl down like you see in typical Kellogs rooster/cockerel images) I suppose their behaviour will also change - apparently when young, cockerals are more friendly to people than hens but then become more aloof as they grow older, and like to perch up high (as a lookout for predators and competition from other roosters)

The reason I avoided the usual wattle and comb size is that my egg laying White Stars have huge ones that flop over their face (link to the post in my diary here) since they were bought Point-of-Lay!

Very true. I had a White Star Point-of-Lay that I kept expecting to crow until she laid an egg.

A glass of Rose is awaiting your presence at the bar )t' Close, very close, that is my fourteen and a half year old Belgian Shepherd who has travelled with me everywhere I have lived since getting her as a pup. Slightly senile now like her owner but she walks and runs the legs of our other dog who is only five!!

The crowing or should I say "attempted" crowing started today and the culprit was.....................Ginger, nothing from any of the others yet but one of the hens our neighbours gave us that looks a dead ringer for Ginger and has us confused (easily done!) as its body shape would say she is more like a he!!!

Time will tell and once we know for certain who is what we will have to decide what to do with them. At present they all get on so we shall see how the situation develops.
