Dong Tao – A Rare Breed of Chicken in Vietnam

Post by dongtao »

Dong Tao chickens, better known as "Dragon Chickens" are native to Dong Tao Commune in Khoai Chau District. This is a special kind of chicken that looks horribly deformed but they are among the world's most expensive poultry as their huge thighs are a delicacy in Vietnam.

It is very difficult to breed this rare species because they are extremely sensitive to changes of temperature and weather and tend to lay fewer eggs than common chickens. Their huge legs and feet also make the hatching process more difficult, so more attention is needed from farmers to produce chicks.

My first reaction was that looks like cruel breeding. Comb over eyes - can't be natural.

if you google Dong Tao Chicken, there are newspaper articles and a link to Wikipedia so is not a "fake". However, I have my doubts about the animals welfare though - especially as they are considered a delicacy for the wealthy (obviously pays to keep breeding such deformaties) ..... sorry for being negative Dongtao, but thank you for your informative post.

Another one here that has never heard of or seen this breed, cannot say I like the look of it though, sorry to the original poster, no offence intended.
Have googled and they are breeding/selling them in the UK.

They are not mutant, it's special. A rare breed of chicken in Vietnam, Once reserved for royalty and ritual offerings, the rare breed is now prized by chicken breeders and its meat is served in exclusive restaurants that cater to the wealthy. A pair of chickens have price up to $2,500 (pure).

I'm not sure if you can find it outside of Vietnam.
