Chicken with closed eye

Post by Newtotherun »

I bought a hybrid at point of lay that I found rarely opened one eye, she was also lethargic and her poo was like runny mustard. I thought it might be the onset of a respiratory problem so I took her to the vet because I need to protect the rest of my flock. (I had kept her contained with the other girl I bought prior to introducing them to my existing 4 girls). The vet gave me antibiotics for the 'poorly' bird to be given by syringe, with non of the other birds to be treated. She is now active, her poo seems normal but she still shuts her one eye more than the other. The girl I bought her with has no symptoms. Can anyone give me any advice please? should I be concerned?
I forgot to mention that the day before I bought my 2 newbies they got very wet in torrential storms, I was not told this at the time of purchase.

If there's no sign of discharge in the eye or nostril that side & she's completely well now, I wouldnt worry. Check her pupil that side is the same size as in the other eye, a small pupil can be a sign of pain in the eye.

GHi another view is (from my vet visits ) is that she still has the infection . Right eye shutting is the sign of illness . Depending on it depending on meds .
Normal treatments range from Tylan , Metacam , Baytril . rest becomes specialist for particular need .
Suggest keep on meds till eye open and or seek advise from vet , Phone call and they may supply meds without the consultation fee .
Keep us up dated as good to have another view and if it all works another tool in the box to fall back on.

I think Bob's had more experience with this issue than me.
